Default 04 XJ8 ticking sound

First off let me say I love this car. We have had it for 4 months and it is amazing. This morning while driving to work I heard a ticking sound that I tought at first was the blower cage. I turned off the fan and it was still there. When I got home I checked a little further and discoverd it was not from the engine I believe, but more pronounced under the driver door. If it was an old dodge I would say the torque converter or flywheel making the sound. It is not "that bad" but I dont want it to get worse. Any ideas? Closest dealer is about 80 miles, so I want to make sure I wont hurt it more trying to get it checked out.
Thanks,
Rob

My car has a little lifter tick when it is cold. Is that what you are hearing? Some engine noises can bounce off the pavement. Another common ticking noise is the purge valve. Is the noise always there or does it come and go?

No I do not think it is lifter noise. It sounds like lifter noise, but it is not all noticable under the hood, but more noticiable under the car and more so on the drivers side.

Does it change speed or volume with engine RPM?

Default ticking noise

The noise is from the purge valve. The newer XJ's like 06 top 09, they had the purge valves surrounded by noise proof foam so you wont hear it activate. I had a customer with an 05, and I tried to get that foam seperate, but the parts dept had a hard time finding it. The foam was not available.

It is not so noticable that I can tell if changes when the engine speeds up. I think it does but it is not that load and the engine and exhaust drowns out the sound as I speed up the engine. As far as the purge valve.... Is that something that goes bad? Does it get worse, becouse I do not rememnber ever hearing it before.

purge valves can go bad but you would usually get a fault. Some can sound exactly like lifter noise. They are pulsed by the ecm and will change speed. I don't know that you would hear it from the area you are indicating but like I said sound bounces around and it could be coming from a totally different place than you think. The purge valve noise is normal. It can get louder if the temperature is cooler out. If it were something in the rotating mass i.e torque converter etc... it would change with engine speed

that is interesting.. louder with cold temp.. that would make sense as it just recently got cold here in southern PA. I am going to check the "change with speed" thing more tomo, but any luck with this foam thing? any idea where I could get my hands on that?

Default Go here... This is it I bet!

https://www.jaguarforums.com/forum/s...ead.php?t=9651

Specifically this post... This the sound? post #24

Then it's post #32 that is the issue...

Noise generally starts at about 20 degrees and gets louder the colder it is. Watch the video.

The purge valve is located in the driver side wheel well behind the plastic shroud. in the rear of the well against the fire wall. Hence the loud sounds in the cabin. Not a defective valve just a "known issue" Ha

That makes my wife (and kids, rear seat heaters) very happy as they were very upset about getting ride of the car. I recently sold a vette to buy the Jag and it to had "quirks" that were just vette related.. I am glad this is only one of those Jag things... Thanks everyone for the great feedback..
