Default 2004 XJ8 Plinth (License Plate Holder) - Screws or Rivets

Hi Guys,

I recently acquired a 2004 XJ8 - however, in NJ - the front plate has to be attached to the front bumper. I want to do this right, so I am in the process of ordering a plinth (C2C1522) - however, what is needed to attach the plinth to the bumper.

I called SNG Barrett and the rep didn't know if the plinth was attached to the bumper via their screws/washers listed (C2C15226) or rivets. I guess it all depends what is behind the bumper. (metal or not)

My license plate holder on my 00 S Type is riveted to the bumper.

Any insight would be helpful.

Thanks - Anthony

I am going through the same process but be careful about the part number you mentioned. That part number says that it's for cars without front parking sensors. I was told if your vehicle has front parking sensors the correct part number should be C2C22633 so that's what I ordered.

I also read a prior post from a dealer that said they either rivet them on or leave them in the trunk by the spare wheel if they are not required.

I went through the same problem when I purchased my 2005 XJ8L VDP. I had purchased the correct plate and found I had to somehow attach it to the bumper. I was not about to drill hoes in anything so I put it away in the trunk along with the licence plate.

Got stopped one day by the police informing me I was missing the licence plate on the front of the car. I showed him the problem concerning drilling holes anywhere and he sort of agreed with me, well sort of. Told me I should then carry the licence plate inside the car placing it where it could be seen from the front. I suggested that would be sort of dangerous in an accident having a possible flying missile with me in the car that had sharp edges. He let me go with a warning that he had informed me I was breaking the law.

Guys,

I looked at the XJ8 bumper covers that are on sale at eBay. There is foam behind the plastic cover - so screws won't work.

My 2000 S Type's licence plate holder was riveted onto the front bumper cover (same deal - plastic then foam) - I changed out the cover and actually ordered the rivets from Jaguar after realizing big box store rivets weren't cutting it.

The part number is: XR813185

I tried the largest size rivets I could find before succumbing to ordering these from Jaguar at $2.70/each - but for some reason - the rivets from Jaguar are wider and longer and do the job.

I am ordering these rivets for my license plate holder for the XJ8 as well from SNG Barrett - I will let you know the outcome when the parts arrive for install.

My plinth is arriving any day now so do the rivets only go through the thin plastic bumper and not into the steel? I am thinking that's a lot of weight to be hanging off that thin plastic bumper cover?

Alan, there's no layer of steel behind the plastic bumper cover - hence why screws won't work. If you use screws to attach the plinth the vibrations would wear out the holes and the plinth would essentially fall off.

The rivets essentially pulls both the plinth and bumper cover together. I changed my 2000 front bumper cover and had to drill the rivets out to remove the plinth to the new bumper cover.

The only other viable option would be to remove the bumper cover and use a screw, bolt and washer - but that's more trouble than what it's worth.

The rivets Jaguar specifies are called for to attach the plinth to the front bumper cover and I have used them with success. Hope this helps...

Someone was advertising the rivet part number on ebay and very kindly listed the size!
5x18mm in case you want to try the local store again

Just to complete the loop on this. The plinth arrived today and if you have front parking sensors the correct part is definitely C2C22633 for the 04 XJ8. The part number abonano listed for the rivets is not listed for this vehicle. so no need to spend $10 with shipping on Jag rivets. With my vehicle there were already 3 painted over holes in the correct position for the plinth to go on. I used regular pop rivets that were about 18mm long but only about 3mm wide. I did use thin washers between the rivet and the plinth as it appears there are cutouts for that purpose. Everything is now very snugly fitted.

Default Picture of Rivet and Plinth

Thanks for sharing Alan - I made it clear the rivets listed were for a 2000 S Type front license plate holder. I've used regular rivets without success though.

I shared the rivet part number with SNG Barrett and I believe they are going to list it under the X350 - XJ8 plinth.

Glad to know your plinth is nice and snug. Can't wait to get mine delivered and installed so I can get my front plate out of my windshield...

UPDATE - My plinth and rivets arrived today. With the rivet XR813185 - these fit onto the X350 plinth snug and ensured a tight fit...

Here is a picture of the plinth installed using the Jaguar rivets.

To confirm - there is NO metal immediately behind the front bumper cover.
