Default Auxiliary pump cross reference

As many of you, I have been involved in the no heat issue on my 2004 XJR. I tried to flush the heater core, and was ready to replace the heater core to solve what seemed like the obvious issue.

However, before digging in, I thought it best to check my auxiliary pump. Definitely shot. It does not work. Dead. And leaking a bit.

The purpose of this thread, hopefully, is to make it easier for future seekers to solve this issue:

What other vehicles used the same pump? It appears that in addition to Jaguar, VW, Ford and Lincoln all used it. Are there others? Most places online are asking $190 plus for the Jag part, and I found what seems to be identical for a VW for $79.

Anyone have this info to share?

The motors might be similar but the connecting hoses and electrical harness plugs might be different.

The VW New Beetle and Jetta 1.8 turbo models use the pump for the turbo after the engine is shut down. I never thought to save one to see if the pumps can be interchanged. I have a few old Jaguar pumps in a pile somewhere.

Mercedes always uses weird harness connectors so rule them out.

I know that the VW pump uses a different plug and that the house sizes are a little large, but it can be made to work.

A mercedes pump can be used, but the electical connector is different. Bosch p/n for a merc. pump is 0 392 022 010

The thing about some of those pumps is that if they are the Pierburg pumps, they are brushless. Also PWM controlled, but will run full speed on straight DC. No brushes to wear out.

The parts to make up the plug are available from BMW. PM if you want the numbers.

Sounds good, but what's their perfomance? Stock pump is rated as 700 liters/hour, while Bosch pump is twice more efficient. The more efficient pump is installed, the less temp. of the air is, the more perfomance is available and there's less risk of detonation (pinging).

Well, for this applicaton it is for the auxillary heater pump .. so not much risk.

For the intercooler, the Pierburg CWA 100 has been measured to be superior to most of the usual suspects including the Bosch 010 pump. As a matter of fact, in the half dozen candidates, the Bosch 010 was at the bottom of the results. Problem is that the Pierburg runs about $500 and very hard to find

In addition to the Bosch 010 pump (about $100 cheapest I could find), you can order the 'connector and wire lead' from Titan Motorsports 877-251-6489
Connector wire part number: TMS BOS-WIRE $10 plus $8 shipping. Sadly, they are currently on backorder, expected back in stock in 2 weeks. I pre-ordered one today.

@matt

you could always try a local BMW or Mercedes dealer. especially BMW since they seem to be happy to sell little bits rather than assemblies like Jaguar.

Matt, did this work out for you? I'm planning a big service of my cooling system, as preventative maintenance, and I figure for $100+ I might as well replace this pump, they seem to be a common failure issue.

*did you buy your pump from Titan also?

Summit Racing also carries this pump at $104.97. I don't know about the electrical connector:

I think it is highly unlikely a BMW or Mercedes dealership would be able to come close to that price. It might be worth researching BMW parts vendors like bavauto.com, andysautosport.com, etc.

Searching the Bosch part number at Amazon yielded this Ford part at $73.95. Looks can be deceiving, but it has a lower-quality appearance compared to the Bosch:

I'll keep watching this thread with interest since no doubt I'll eventually have to address this on our '04 XJR also.

Cheers,

Don

Good finds Don - glad to see Summit doesn't charge a 'handling fee' anymore for over $100 buys, but I'd have to pay tax.

I see the 010 pump on amazon (Mercedes version? that MoscowLeaper referenced) for $106.75 shipped.

The 010 has the wrong type of electrical connector...the link I provided earlier for the adapter is the same size/type as the original harness. I ended up shelving the 010 and ordered the 002 which is a direct swap. Oh, direct swap... plus you need a new strap or bracket to secure it wether the old one was located.

I was able to pull/push the original rubber bracket down off the original pump and just slid it onto the new pump.

dsetter, are you talking about the aux coolant pump or the intercooler pump? I see most on this thread have XJR's
( Looks like they can both be replaced with the same pump)

dsetter, the 010 and 002 was WAY too large to fit the original pump's rubber ring/mount. I did slide it off and check...but no joy.
