Default Cracked engine mount

I have a 2007 XJ Super V8. The local Jaguar service shop recommended that the engine mounts be changed because it is cracked and leaking. I took it to an indie and said it is not cracked and doesn't contain fluids. Is the indie incorrect that the engine mounts do not contain fluids/oils? He showed it to me when the car was hoisted and I didn't see any cracks nor leaks when viewed underneath the car when hoisted. Not sure who to believe. The car has 97,000 miles on it.

No, the dealer is correct in this case. The engine and transmission mounts are hydraulic and can leak when they crack (as well as collapse). It's not like it is a huge amount of fluid, maybe an ounce in each mount. I've replaced mine for the same reason. It looked like power steering fluid on the undertray beneath the mount that failed.

Thanks mhamilton for your feedback. I'll have the engine mounts replaced. it's not that expensive if I provide my own Jaguar OEM engine mount part and the Indie mechanic charges very minimal.

Hi philc850,

For fair prices on OEM Jaguar parts, try our forum sponsors Coventry West, SNG Barratt and Jagbits, who offer discounts to forum members. For parts that those vendors have to get from Jaguar anyway, you may find the best prices at online Jaguar dealers gaudinjaguarparts.com (Las Vegas) and jaguarmerriamparts.com (Merriam, Kansas).

Cheers,

Don

I have in my possession a brand new transmission mount (upgraded version it seems) which I am getting ready to install and I can assure you it is not hydraulic. Do not know about the engine mounts.

philc850 did you have the engine mounts replaced? Any noticeable differences in ride quality?

There are a lot of bushes around the car called "Hydrabushes". These have fluid inside but how it is used as part of the mount, I know not, but I suspect it is to absorb vibration. The Technical Notes says they are to improve refinement. It is quite possible the engine mounts are of this type. There are two in each of the front and rear subframes, the other four are normal rubber "Silentbloc" type. Also the front lower wishbone "banana" arm bushes are Hydrabush type

So, is the transmission mount a hydrabush? There are two different opinions here and the new one I have doesn't look to be hydraulic, but I am not sure how to tell. What I do know is that my left engine mount lets the engine rock up considerably on the left side, probably to the full extent alllowed by the little straps on the mount, so it will be replaced along with the transmission mount this weekend if the weather cooperates.
