Default Dealer pushes 5k mile services

I am the happy owner of a 2007 XJ8 L, purchased almost 18 months ago. When I had the 30,000 mile service done at the local dealer the service report stated that the next scheduled maintenance was at 35,000 miles.
This confused me, as the manual said 40,000 miles was the next one.

A mailing from the dealership later with their service schedule made clear that the extra 5,000 mile services include an oil change plus some minor other stuff and IIRC costs a little over $100.

It's been about 5,000 miles since the service. I figure it's time to get the oil changed, for which the dealer charges $50 with a coupon. (The manual doesn't seem to say how often the oil should be changed, but 5,000 miles seems reasonable as there are a lot of short trips and not many miles a year).

So, is the 35,000 mile service just an overpriced oil change, or is this a recognized practice in the Jaguar world?

Plus, I know nothing about car maintenance. So if I just get the oil change, is there anything I should check myself to make sure the car is OK to the next official service.

I found the sheet they sent -- the X5,000 mile service is supposed to be oil change, "top up fluid levels," "Check belts, hoses, etc" and "General safety check." For $120.

Meanwhile I remembered that they used to list an oil change at $100, so maybe this seemed more reasonable before they cut the price on the regular oil change.

I change my oil myself with a Genuine Jaguar Oil Filter and Mobil1 Oil of 5W-30 flavor every 6K miles.

Takes 20 minutes from start to finish and costs about $50 in materials. Plus I know its done and done correctly.

Thanks to both of you for the replies.

This raises another question. It looks like an oil change is specified as part of the regular 10,000 mile services, and some people think that's often enough. On the other hand, other people (above and in other threads) seem to favor changes at 6,000 miles, 7,000 miles etc.

How do those fit together? Say I got the oil changed in the 30,000 mile service. Then I change after 7,000 miles at 37,000 miles. But, when I take the car in for the 40,000 mile service they're going to change the oil anyway. So the next change is after only 3,000 miles.

Can I just ask them to skip the oil change that time and still have this counted as the official 40K service for the service history?

I think if you rely on the dealer to do your service and don't intend to keep your car any length of time than 10K oil changes are fine, just do it when the dealer sees fit. (if they change it at all.) I severely distrust dealerships of all forms/makes and manufacturers after numerous instances of being ripped off in my early years of vehicle ownership.

I personally take care of my vehicles myself, hence I don't follow scheduled maintenance, I have my own schedule that is far more comprehensive and complete with less time in between service than the Jag dealer advises.

I know my Benz is on a 13K mile service schedule with MBUSA, I change it every 6K miles even though I know its overkill, since it has 8.5qts of oil in it. The $60 I spend twice is still cheaper than one oil change at the MB dealership, using Benz supplies and Mobil1 oil.

I think the last time I checked with the Benz Dealership an oil change or Sch A service was over $200. The Jag dealer regularly advertises a $125 oil change but for only 6 qts.. the XJ8 uses 7 go figure.

A 3K, 5K, or 7K mile oil change is a sales pitch and there is no evidence changing oil this often extends the life of a modern motor. Modern engine/oil technology is light years ahead of where we were in the 1960s when your father changed oil in his Buick every 3K miles. If you owned a Jiffy Lube or were a dealer able to charge $100 for an oil change, do you think you'd promote a 10K oil change, or a 5K oil change?

Manufacturers are all moving to a 10K, even a 15K oil change interval (BMW) because changing sooner is wasteful and irresponsible. I own 3 jags and change oil every 12K miles, but do an interim oil filter only change at either the 4K or 6K points.

Oil itself is not spent until it no longer cleanses (technically, in the correct volume, it will lubricate forever). The smart approach is to not guess which interval is a good one, but get an oil analysis. Blackstone Labs is one that I use, costs $20 for a comprehensive analysis and includes an estimated oil change interval for future changes. My last analysis at a 12K interval in my X350 suggested the change interval could have been extended to 20K miles.

If you're doing a lot of short journeys where the engine does not get really warm, the extra oil change will be beneficial, but for normal motoring the Jaguar 10,000 miles or yearly interval is sufficient in my view. FWIW my Jaguar oil is only now looking a bit dirty after 10k miles, whereas my MG Midget is getting dirty yet I've only done 1600 miles in it, and all on longish journeys. The Midget is only on 25k miles too. Difference between old and new engine technology, I suppose.

Have a look at your oil and make a judgement.
