Default "How To Replace": Windshield Wipers 'O4 XJ VDP

This another helpful, "How To", to add to my other successful posts regarding oil changes and brake jobs.

This vintage Jaguar has very complex windshield wipers. The wiper blade assembly has the washer spray nozzle integrated into it, the drivers-side has an air-foil attached and they are two different lengths. Also you can not lift the arms very high when servicing them. Factory is the only option, since generic wiper blade replacements will not work.

The simple solution is to just replace the blades. They are manufactured by TRICO and sold at O'Reilly for about $15.00 total.

TRICO refill part numbers: 45-190 and 45-245 @ $6.99 each.

Link to O'Reilly Auto Parts: http://www.oreillyauto.com/site/c/se...04&make=Jaguar

They are two different lengths. The longer fits the drivers-side.

Replacement is simple. Locate the tip of the old blade where the stainless steel "Barb's" are visible. Carefully take a pliers and squeeze them together while pulling away. This should release the blade and it can be pulled out easily.

Now on the new refill, there are (3) black plastic retainers that temporarily hold the stainless steel strips into the sides of the rubber blade prior to installation. These slide down and are discarded as you thread the new blade onto the wiper.

Easy low cost fix. Works great. Good luck.

Bosch do a retrofit Aerotwin set AR608S for about £20 (in the UK) with integral jets which come preset for LHD cars but can easily be switched over for RHD. Takes about 5 minutes to change the blades without the need to pry the arms off the drive shafts.

Thanks mucho Edobernig,
Awkward on the XJ but with the able assist from the wife who I shall obey (its her car) got the job done just short of a Heineken.

I found this NOT to be the case.
When I first got my 350, the wiper blades that were fitted were not great! So I actually took the Aqua Blades that were fitted to my Volvo S60 (the car the Jaguar was replacing) and slotted them into place.
They are slightly longer, but the washer nozzles simply unclipped from my original blades and clipped straight onto the ones from my old Volvo.
They are still on the car to this day, have seen me through a British winter with no issues and took about five minutes to swap. Oh and my car passed its MOT (annual road worthiness test) last week

Just for clarity's sake, the URL for O'Reilly is http://www.oreillyauto.com. If you Google "oreilly", the first site that comes up is actually NAPA Auto Parts, and the 45-190/45-245 stock numbers either don't exist or point to completely different parts!

Thanks!

Scott,
The part numbers listed are the valid ZICO manufacturers part numbers visible in the first photo on the packaging, not the vendors UPC. I added a direct link to the O'Reilly Auto Part page showing the exact blades for future reference of Forum members. Finally beautiful weather has returned to Wisconsin. Have a great day.

Smile Trico wiper inserts

It took just a few minutes, following the above instructions, to remove and replace the old inserts. Thank you very much.

Singing "I can see clearly now" seems appropriate.

Thanks for the info. I bought Michelin wiper assemblies that the book at the store said would fit, but after puzzling through it, then looking at this thread, I just pulled the inserts out and installed them in the Jag assembly...took about 10 minutes.

I've been looking for replacement blades for my 04 XJ8. I printed edbernig's photo of the two blades together and took it to my local O'Reilly Auto Parts store. There were several versions of Trico blades on the display but not the one in the photo. And the self-service gizmo where you look up your own blades called for a RainX blade.

I took the photo to the counter and asked about them. They did indeed have them in stock. $6.29 per blade (same price for 19" and 24 1/2") and very easy to install. They work great.

Here's a hint: If you go into O'Reilly looking for them and don't see them publicly displayed, ask for them. The clerk told me that they keep them in the parts racks behind the counter because people were bad to steal blade refills more so than the complete wiper.

Champion AW60 (24") and AW45 (18") wet blades do work on X350. They do have windscreen sprayer properly oriented. Using them on mine. Shipped from UK. Arms were $14 and $9 respectively, shipping $25. RockAUTO is where I picked them up.

There seems to be nobody selling these Trico refills in the UK or even in Europe; why ?

BTW To get the wiper to park itself half way thru the cycle, turn the ignition switch to on but not all the way to start the engine and pull the wiper stalk towards you (like a single wipe) and it parks itself.

The Car Care Kiosk website shows how to do lots of little things, like bulb replacement, wipers, change filters, etc.

Fantastic post! 15 minutes and my previously tired, streaking wipers are working fine again.

Many thanks!

FYI, the washer fluid holes are at about a 45 degree angle. Use a pin to clear them out if spray is uneven. Do NOT push pin at 90 degrees to wiper, it must be about 45 degrees angle.

Is the nozzle assembly just clipped on to the wiper arm? If not where are the nozzle jets?

Thanks edobernig, This was great.

Now auto parts store around the Psadena CA area stocks just the rubbers anymore. I called national chains and independents.

I was able to get the parts on eBay. I found the Trico 45-245. But I could not get the Trico 45-190. Instead I had to settle for a NAPA 60-1900.

I got both with free shipping for around US$20.

Thanks again.

O'Reilly very efficiently ordered the specified blades. Regrettably, my blade receptacles are too narrow for them. Any ideas? Thanks.
