Default Long Time to reach Operating Temps

Do all of your XJRs take forever to warm up? I find that it takes several 7-10 Miles of driving before the vehicle is at Full Operating Temp.

Its even much worse when its colder. The car feels like its ready to go earlier on ie the heat is blowing and the motor not so stiff, but it just seems like the gauge is slow.

It could be a crook gauge, but that is fairly unlikely. Likely is that your thermostat has died and gone to thermostat heaven. The engine should warm up within a mile or so, even on a cold winter day. Cold engines suffer increased wear to the bores, so I'd suggest that you fix it sooner rather than later.

The other thing to do at the same time if it hasn't already been attended to, is to replace the entire thermostat housing which is a form of Bakelite, with a machined aluminium one. They are aftermarket, not available through your Jaguar dealer (who will feed you all sorts of B.S. about why you shouldn't, and how the new Jag components are better than the old etc etc). If you get that, point a rigid upward facing digit at him and take your business to someone who cares about your motoring enjoyment, not his financial wellbeing at your expense!!

Check the bottom hoses at the same time, it's cheaper in the long run since they are not that easy to get at.

Cheers,

Languid

It could well be the thermostat but I had a similar issue on my 2004 and plugged an OBD unit in to monitor the car output and found that the gauge was way behind the real temperature as the car warmed up so stopped worrying about it.

If the heater is getting warm early on, it sounds like the gauge.

Thanks guys. Interestingly enough I took it out last night and after 5-6 miles it was showing about 1/2 way to operating temps. Then i pushed the car harder, and it threw a Check Engine Light. Don't know if this is related or not.

I'm going to have the code pulled some time today. I will advise when I know.

I feel like it is probably the gauge. I have had much older higher mileage cars that got to stand operating temperature way faster... There is just no way.

ps, does anyone know if there is Code Reader that can be purchased for this car for cheap? Would hate to have to hit a mechanic every time i get an error message.

Take it by Autozone or the like and they will pull the codes for you for free (and probably try to sell you injector cleaner or something).

Had a buddy pull the code yesterday. It was a thermostat code. Good call Languid. I had him reset the light. If it pops back up, I will do the work.

Thanks guys
