Default My transmission removal & rebuild

This thread is for anyone who's facing a misbehaving transmission and are thinking about removing it yourself. Ive been having consistent transmission issues (namely - 3-4 squawk noise) See threads below for history.
https://www.jaguarforums.com/forum/x...ditive-198143/
https://www.jaguarforums.com/forum/x...ts-end-190552/
https://www.jaguarforums.com/forum/x...th-6th-211104/

Its finally reached a point where any normal to heavy acceleration in 4th 5th or 6th and the transmission makes the squawk noise and slips badly. From my research this appear to be a failed/slipping 'E' Clutch. It is time to remove the transmission and get it rebuilt.

The removal was very straightforward. The biggest thing is securing the driveshaft and labeling the flange bolts. One of the dowels on the trans was stuck and took some 'persuasion' to remove.
Total time was 4-5 hours.

The picture below shows my makeshift transmission jack (lol) and a piece of ductaped 2x4 that is used to wedge in between front crossmember and oil pan (per removal procedure)

Im taking it to a local shop who's worked on ZF 6HP26's before to have it rebuilt.

Stay tuned...

Please let us know the cost of the rebuild.

If I ever have issues, just tempted to put a used one off ebay with a warranty in like was done with my wife's 06 rover.

I was quoted 2200$ for a full rebuild w/ ZF parts, rebuilt torque converter is included as well.

While the transmission is off getting rebuilt, Im working on a few other items on the to-do list.

Next up is Bosch SC coolant pump upgrade. Even with the bumper off this was a tedious install. the bigger pump is a snug fit in the stock location. My custom pigtail was easy enough to make though.

Where did you get the bosch pump for how much? Brushless? I got a brushless pump but had to run adapters as the inlet/outlet were slightly smaller.

I believe I found it on ebay. It was around 100$. I sourced the pigtail pieces from Mercedes benz. The same pigtail is used on the coolant reservoir level switch too.
This pump is for the super charger cooling loop - this isnt the aux pump used for circulating fluid through the heater cores

Have always made the pig tails, or jumper harness adapters, to fit the bikes, as well as any car adaptations made.
That way you can always go back to stock, if things don't work out.
Many times your outsourced, save money part, is better than the stock one.
Then if it winds up saving you money to boot.
Life is good, if it was your own idea, even sweeter.

Transmission is back from the shop.

The culprit was a badly worn bushing on the E clutch drum. This excessive wear caused fluid pressure loss which in turn caused the noise and eventual slippage.

Since Im a bit paranoid about what kind of particulates may have been circulating around, I decided it would be best to flush the cooler & lines out. I bought 2 cans of this stuff and flushed the crap out of the cooler.

I still have to finish replacing the serp belts, tensioners and water pump. I hope to have the trans in and the car running next week.

Wrapping up the install of all new belts & tensioners. I also have to replace my already leaking waterpump I installed a year ago (annoying).

I also had to reinstall new sway bar bushings. It pays to get quality components the first time!

Transmission is going in shortly..

Does anyone else have rusty subframes on their cars? The edges of mine in certain spots are rustier than I care to see. I scooped some POR15 and went to town with a tiny hobby brush. I focused on the front subframe arms and the rearmost bar of the front crossmember/cradle assembly.

Spray used A T F, or motor oil on mine, from time to time.

My hat off to you sir for having the courage of dropping this giant transmission unit in you garage. I did a baby clutch job on my Miata and the transmission weight less than 100 pounds and I am not looking forward to do it again.

Restored the front x-member in my XJ40 with POR. At the time, the dealer thought it was a new one installed. Your x-member will now be there long after the car is gone. Years of road salt will not affect the POR. You have to grind it off to get it off. Great stuff.
