Please tell me has anyone found the front brakes to rattle?

Default Please tell me has anyone found the front brakes to rattle?

My car is without flaw, no lie. Everything has been fixed from tip to tail. From top to bottom. I can not get my factory pads to stop making a rattle over bumps. I have expanded them so the outer pads are tight to the caliper but I am finding that the entire caliper is actually moving, its almost as if the pins are TOOOO short and need to hold the caliper in place. Was there a revision made on the pins? 2007 XJR

Silly Question but do you have the anti rattle spring under the pins?

Its a W shaped piece of spring steel that goes over the pads and under the 2 pins

Yes, but even if they are in place the caliper moves and clunks. I hold my foot on the pedal and the noise goes away. I go to the caliper and it moves around. I can replace the clip, possibly the retention over time has gotten to them and caused it not to be as tight as it should. Funny thing is the RH side is 11.00 the LH side is 66.00. What is that about? Maybe I should Dermal a groove in the bottom of each pad to make it hold is tighter and not allow for the clip to move outward.

Am I reading this correctly - is the whole caliper moving? One thing is for sure - it should not move. The retaining bolts fit into reamed holes in the caliper body, and they clamp it (very) solidly to the upright.

Fin another similar car and take a look - it sounds as if your bolts are incorrect.

The caliper is fixed and the disk/pads float

There are 2 locations for the rattle, top and sides
On the sides you have Shim plates and the top has the anti rattle clip

If the caliper is moving (not the pistons) you have issues with the caliper and or bolts

Can you post a pic of where it moves?

Those are for the Brembo style that are very attractive. The ones with the clips on the top and the two pins. The 04-up went cheap. They are held in with two bolts and the calipers move very freely. Not until I put in the W clip that the caliper tightens. Still I can move the caliper with my hands which is where the noise comes into play. Esp. over small divots in the road and esp. over rough roads. If I put my foot on the brake and drive the noise is gone. I have removed the calipers, checked the rubber grommets that hold the pins in place and they are good. It is almost as if the bolts are to short on the length of the threads. It needs to be held up and held up tight. Then the clip should hold the pads in tight. They hold the pads but wont support the calipers weight. Something is a miss.

I don't quite understand what you are saying....

Do you mean that the whole caliper assembly is loose on the vertical link? You should not be able to move it at all when it's bolted to the vertical link. Then there would be a problem with the mounting of the caliper to the vertical link itself. That's bad...

If you mean that you are able to move the pads inside the calipers (like they slide on the two pins at the top), then maybe one or more pistons are jammed, which is known to happen with the Brembos. It would mean that one of the pads is not properly in contact with the brake rotor because one of the pistons is not pushing on the back of the pad.

You can buy relacement seals and pistons if needed.

Sounds like you need to get that checked ASAP, I'm reading it as the calipers having movement, which isn't good.

Not to be even more pedantic than normal, but as I taught my children, the most important system on any moving vehicle is the BRAKES.

I agree with Jim and others that you have a potentially serious safety issue that must be resolved before you drive the car anywhere except to a good professional mechanic. Your life may depend on it. Having the car towed would be an even better idea. A member of our S-Type forum recently reported that one of his front calipers had come free, possibly due to the mounting bracket screws loosening and falling out.

First, another silly question: You mention that the pads are "factory," but you don't mention that they are "new." If they are well worn, the calipers/pistons may have approached the limit of their travel.

You lost me on the above point. Are 11.00 and 66.00 measurements? Of what? In what units?

Here's the parts diagram from VIN G49701, which probably covers your 2007:





There should be absolutely no movement between the caliper mounting bracket, Part 4, and the vertical link/steering knuckle. There can be a very slight amount of play in Part 3, the caliper itself, but since you are reporting significant play, I think Cambo's idea of a stuck piston is a good possibility (Part 9, shown with its protective gaiter).


For comparison, here's the diagram for the supercharged cars up to VIN G49700:





If you want to do further diagnostics before taking the car to a professional Jaguar specialist, I highly recommend that you disassemble both calipers and compare all the parts to see if you can identify the source of the problem. It's usually easy to rebuild a caliper with new seals and pins, and the parts can be found very inexpensively if you shop around.

Please don't take any unnecessary risks and please keep us informed.

I went to the dealership after much contemplation and talked with a mechanic. He said the first thing to do since the caliper bushings were good was to replace the clip that holds the caliper in perfect alignment. 12.00 later I changed them and that solved the problem. The tensile strength of the metal had become fatigued from heat and age. No more noise.

Great news, a nice cheap and easy fix and most of all, no more noise.....thanks for sharing

Reviving this thread. Looks like Collector 1 didn't reply back to Don but I think your assumption (last question from you) is correct Don.

Anyhoo... I have the same front end rattle. I did the usual suspension bush checks. I replaced inner and outer tie rods as they were worn.

I pulled the stabilizer links and they're shot. I drove around with them disconnected to confirm they were the source of the rattle, but, with them disconnected, the rattle is still present.

I have the links on order.

I ran a search and came across this thread. So with some rope holding my sway bar in suspension (I'm still chucking at that one, as I may indeed be one DNA strand removed from genuine hillbilly), I drove around the neighborhood and all rattles disappear when I apply the brakes lightly while staying on the accelerator.

To be clear, the pads are rattling. The calipers are firmly in place.

I'm going to replace my pads with ceramics. I'm sick of the dust on my wheels so two birds.

I have the brembo brakes. My laptop with the EPC on it is down right now.

Can any of you gent's supply me with the brembo anti rattle clip part number?

Also, if I could ask, which S-Type has the Brembo Brakes? I want to do a search by both models to see if they're priced differently.

Hi Sean,

If your VIN is G49700 or lower, the clip/spring and pins are Part 8 in the second diagram I posted earlier. If that matches your calipers, the Part 8 part number for the kit is C2C21785. I think I recall that when I compared the Jaguar price at jaguarmerriamparts.com and the aftermarket price at RockAuto.com, the decision was a no-brainer.

If your VIN is G49701 or higher, let me know, because there are a few other other details we have to know in order to determine the correct anti-rattle clip (Part 12 in the first diagram I posted earlier).

I just did a quick check of the S-Types and it looks like supercharged models range from VIN M45255 to N52047, and the part number for the clip & pin set is the same, C2C21785. It's possible that there were additional supercharged cars after that VIN range but the calipers would be like the first diagram I posted before.

FYI - Hardware kit Centric 11720003 is affordable. Under $26. C2C21785 is over $100 and doesn't come up on Rock Auto.

I just searched RockAuto for an '05 Super V8 and the results show the Centric 11720003 kit is just $18.20. You mentioned "Under $26.) Is it possible we could both search RockAuto and get different prices? I'm curious because I've ordered ignition coils from RockAuto a couple of times and every time I've needed to check them the same Airtex/Wells/FoMoCo coil has been a different price!

BTW, no comment on Jaguar's price of $100 for a spring and a couple of pins. No comment, no comment, no comment!

Hey Don. I saw it on Rock Auto for the same price as you. Summit had it for under $26.

And if I'm not mistaken, the Centric kit does both front calipers, whereas the Jaguar kit does only one caliper!
