Steering Wheel Sound at low Speeds

There is a somewhat hard to describe sound coming from the steering wheel of my 04 xjr. It has been occurring for several years. It is a low zingy-whine sound. It occurs only when turning at very low speeds. I would think a sound like this might come from the steering pump, but this seems to emanate from the steering wheel?

Any ideas?

Thanks.

I've moved your post from the XK8/R section to the XJ (X350/358) section where folks with the same model can best assist

I too have been getting a sort of a squeaking sound from the steering wheel at very low speeds for some time. I was concerned initially, but since there were no evident issues while driving, now I just ignore it.

If it's the sound i'm thinking of then it's a known issue and there is an additive which can be added to the power steering fluid which will stop the squeaking.

I had the same issue with my 04 Vanden Plas. I found the additive previously mentioned, part #C2S48887(google it) It is a 50ml bottle and you have to remove 50ml's of power steering fluid from your car(assuming it's full) and replace with the new bottles contents.. Works like a charm..

I get a groaning noise from somewhere around the top of the column behind the binnacle. It is a rubbery groan if that makes sense, and only occurs at low speeds. I just live with it as I don't find it disturbing.

My X-Type had the noise and a bottle of that additive made it go away.

My XJR has the noise, and it bothers me, but not enough to have done anything about it for the last 2 years, I think I will order a bottle now though...

In my 06 x350, the dealer indicated it was a known issue but didn't cause any damage or wear on parts. He said I should leave it alone since they charged $90 to fix it - YIKES!!!!

I went to an indy shop (for an unrelated issue) - they took out 50 ml of PS fluid and put this stuff in for $15. The new fluid takes a while to work it's way thru the system but within 1 week of moderate use the noise was completely gone.

So no damage, but if you can get your hands on the fluid, it's worth doing.

This is indeed a well-known issue and a simple DIY repair. I'm attaching the Jaguar TSB outlining the problem and resolution.

The additive is Jaguar part C2S 48887, available from the online Jag dealers like jaguarmerriamparts.com and gaudinjaguarparts.com, as well as major independent Jag parts suppliers like forum sponsors SNG Barratt and Jagbits, and others such as Coventry West and Welsh Enterprises.
