Default Sunroof reset procedure: RESOLVED

Problem:
The sunroof button (Sliding Roof button) does not work both ways. The sunroof button only moves the sunroof forward but not back into the roof. The sunroof button does not return the sunroof to park or rest or closed. Nothing happens when the Open Sunroof (rear) half of sunroof button is pressed. The sunroof is stuck open. The sunroof does not respond to Global Open.

I searched this forum for weeks and finally stumbled across the solution in the X-Type forum by accident while looking for a work-around, attempting to enable Global Close. (Can't seem to enable without SDD)
Thank you FactoryJagTech!

Original post: Sunroof switch not working properly - Jaguar Forums - Jaguar Enthusiasts Forum

Sunroof Reset procedure:
With the roof in its closed position, at rest:
- Key in the ignition, turn to the On position:
- Press and HOLD the sunroof button forward, as if you are going to tilt open the rear of the sunroof.
- Continue holding for 20 seconds.
- Release the button and immediatly push and HOLD the button exactly the same way in the same direction (forward to tilt open) and continue holding.
The roof should flip up and down, then slide back all the way, then slide forward all the way, and finally stop in the closed position.
- Release the sunroof button only after the sunroof has stoped the cycle in the closed position.

If it keeps losing its memory, you will need to replace the sliding roof control module.

I can't thank FactoryJagTech enough for this seeming minor and simple procedure that will save forum members untold anguish and possibly thousands of dollars of uneccisary "repair" bills. I am so relieved to have found this procedure.

PS - the original post also includes links to Lincoln LS parts to replace broken sunroof sliding mechanism and How-To by Ragsman, which can save you about $1,000 in labor.

Default Thanks for the Tip!

Know its an old post, but the info is still useful! Just did sunroof rebuild and this little tip saved a whole bunch of hassle. Followed exactly and my sunroof recalibrated and we are up and running.

If any of you are rebuilding your sunroof tracks this little tip is awesome for the end...

Old post that continues to deliver value. Just repaired the broken track assemblies in my 05 XJR and needed to reset the sunroof (kept reopening) and this procedure did the trick. Thank you! No longer will I fear a broken sunroof!

Just a bit off topic and apparantly I keep posting to the wrong thread but my 98 XJ8 has decided the sunroof will be my next dilemma. I hear the motor running when pushing the rear of the button but no movement . Forward press gives no noise or motion. The rear of my shade is currently stuck in the roof. I'm learning as I go thanks to you fine gentlemen and any tips will help. Also is there a manual way to retract the shade into the roof and leave only the the tinted glass in place ? Thanks again

Hello,
My sunroof tilts up and tilts down and closes, but it wont slide back. Nothing happens when I try pressing the back portion of the button. I have tried doing the reset as described in this tread, but I have not had any success. Am I doing it wrong? Does anyone have any suggestions?
Thanks!
Chris

You might need to replace the sliding roof control module. Start at the switch, if it's not making a good solid contact, the procedure won't work.

Thank you for your feedback. I kept trying to reset the sunroof with no luck until this week, when I accidentally found that it worked while I was driving. I was able to slide it all the way back and forward. However, when I tried again later, it wouldn’t slide.

Yesterday, I noticed that when I pressed the button to tilt, it did tilt, and when I pressed the button to close, it closed—but not completely flush. To help it along, I pressed on the sunroof while holding the button, and it finally closed all the way. Now it slides back and forth like it should.

I suspect the mechanism was sticking, preventing it from closing fully and sliding properly. What’s the best way to lubricate the mechanism to prevent this issue from happening again?

Thanks!
Chris
