Default Transmission lock in park

Anyone know how to remove, then replace the transmission linkage parking lock?
My 04's has not worked since i've had it.
If parts not expensive, & not all that hard to replace.
Thought i would replace it, so if the 07's ever stopped working, i'd know how to fix it

You need to remove the shifter, then you can access the transmission parking lock mechanism.

The removal of the shifter involves the removal of the centre console. The isntructions can be found in the workshop manual posted here in the forum:

https://www.jaguarforums.com/forum/x...enance-246865/

Depending on the defect, it might be necessary to repalce the whole shifter. With a bit of luck, you can find a used one. Another possibility that is not allowed here in Germany and that would cause problems at the MOT, is the removal of the locking mechanism from the shifter.

Dismantling the shifter is was a topic of another thread here in the forum, I would have to search for it.

Best regards,

Thomas

Ugh, memories of fixing that on my 2003 S55 some years ago, which I could not get out of Park (fortunately at home!)

No idea how the lock mechanism compares between the Merc and the Jag, but on my Merc, with ignition on and pressing the brake pedal, a solenoid operated a plunger that moved a plastic latching arm out of a notch in the shifter's locking lever, and as that plastic arm moved, it engaged a pin to release the locking lever, so it was two stages; unblock the locking lever and then release it. Of course, the plastic piece was broken. Mercedes doesn't sell it, their fix is to replace the shifter, whose price has a comma in it! Some enterprising vendor has the part by itself, and while removing and disassembling the shifter is not for the faint of heart, less than 15 bucks fixed it!

It' basically the same with the Jag, both regarding the operation (with some minor differences) and the availability of parts...

Best regards,

Thomas

My cousin asked me, "Why would they put such a cheap plastic part in what is otherwise a very sturdy set of mechanical pieces?" My assumption would be as a sacrificial part to save the rest of the mechanism if something jams up.

Or it might be just plain cost saving...

Thomas

What difference does 50 cents vs 2 bucks make in a 1500-dollar assembly? Admittedly, pulling number out my butt as guesses, but that plastic piece could easily have been aluminum, or even stamped sheet metal.

That is what happens with new designs: development engineering deisgns to pass the specification; documentation gets to factory in low cost regions (PRC) and cost saving kicks in. Local mangement incentivised by cost saving bonuses circumvent review with development engineers...
All too familiar to me: I am living final phase of this rat race!

Believe me, it makes a huge difference to car manufacturers, for them already single digit cent amounts make huge differences,.. if you see where these savings backfire in a big way and cost a lot more money for rectifications than what was saved, you really start to wonder.

Best regards,

Thomas

How would one remove the locking piece of plastic, without linkage disassembly???
Question being asked is because.
The 04's locking mechanism, has not worked, since purchased.
But the 07's is still working, & locking in park.
Have had the console out, but not the shifting linkage.
Would rather NOT, have to remove the linkage, if at all possible.

You have to remove the linkage in order to disassemble the shifter and remove or modify the plastic piece concerned, but the removal is pretty straigthforward, I did not have any roubles. If you have the console out, you have already done most of the removal work.

Best regards,

Thomas

my husband and I took out the center console and in the gear box there is a black plastic circle around the shifter that slips off some times we took off the knob it twists off

Could it be that the picture of the shifter you posted do not show the shifter of the X350, but the one of the X308?

It looks different to the shifter of my X350.

Best regards,

Thomas
