Default What do I have to do???

Hello all, hope this is the right forum...

I've got a 2007 XJ8L with the 4.2L V8 engine. I just had the Bank 1 catalytic converter
and it's two oxygen sensors replaced because I was getting a P0420.

I'm trying to complete a drive cycle for emissions testing and I've got three I/M monitors
that just don't want to complete. I've tried doing some of the suggested drive cycle
parameters like coasting from 55mph, stop the engine then restart, let idle for 5 mins,
etc. The three I/M's are:

EVAPORATIVE SYSTEM
SECONDARY AIR SYSTEM
OXYGEN SENSOR

I've just put over 80 miles thru residential, city and freeway driving and these three
just won't cooperate.

What do I have to do, driving-wise, to get these to clear and be "ready"

Any help appreciated...

Mike

Oxygen Monitors. Start car, put in 3 - get rpms to about 3500, hold for 30 seconds, coast to.a stop - let engine idle for 11 mins.

Oxygen monitors. (Heater) - start car, drive for about 15 mins in 2, 3 and 4 gear, get rpms to between 3000 to 3500 for about 10 - 15 seconds then slow down. Do that for a few times while driving around.

Evap.

Cold engine (1st drive of the day), above 40 degrees outside. Fuel level between 25% to 75% (ideal is half tank) start car and get to a highway.

Do NOT shut engine off until the following is complete.

When getting on highway - put gear into 2 or 3. Get the rpms up to 3500 for about 4 seconds then switch over to D.

Drive around 5 minute ls between 50 to 55 mph. Then drive between 55 - 65 mph. Easy on gas pedal for about 10 more minutes.

Stop car - let idle for 1 minute then drive for about another 20 mins and shut down.

May need to do the above twice.

The last one, don't have a procedure for that but it should set with the above.

Update:

Just put about 85 miles over about two-and-a-half hours driving the above profiles.
I think I met them pretty closely, or even exactly at times, depending on how the
road conditions and traffic would allow.

Some of the profiles were repeated ad nauseam. During the entire time driving,
the three aforementioned I/M's always showed NOT READY

It was only when I rechecked the OBD I/M status after I got home, did I see that
apparently the EVAPORATIVE SYSTEM finally passed.

Unfortunately, the SECONDARY AIR SYSTEM and OXYGEN SENSOR are still
NOT PASSED.

One thing to note: A new DTC has popped up. U0426 "INVALID DATA RECEIVED-IMMOBILIZER
CONTROL MODULE.

Could this be associated with the two I/M's not clearing? Seems suspicious...

Mike
(thoroughly frustrated)

Evap is the hardest to set so do not clear any codes or you will be back at square one. May take a few more tries

Check that your new O2 connectors are fully mated.

Update #2

I've put on over 400 miles since the reset and the two I/M's refuse to test.
SECONDARY AIR SYSTEM
OXYGEN SENSOR
Have driven all sorts of recommended profiles. Residential, city and highway,
all to no avail.

I would think if one of the O2 sensors were not connected properly, I would get
another P0420, but that is not happening, and OXYGEN SENSOR HEATER is testing ok.

I'm at my wits end...

V8 ENGINE MANAGEMENT SYSTEM
Vehicle Coverage:
S-Type 2006 MY Onwards
XJ 2006 MY Onwards
May 2005

Will help - it's on the site/net somewhere as a PDF. To large to upload here I think.

I had almost the same problem after clearing my DTCs. However in my case it was the CCM that would not set. I even followed other manufacturer's procedures. Finally, I warmed it up with the defrosters on (even the heated seats) then hit the open road. I used everything I could think of all functions of the cruise control, ABS, DSC and Sport Mode. Then I drove it like I stole it. Letting it shift through the shift points at WOT, cruised through the really twisty roads strictly using the J-gate and basically had a lot of fun. About 60 miles later I came home and checked again. Finally everything was "set". All in all I drove through 2 full tanks of gas and then some.

I also would expect to see the P420 again. However if the monitors will not set, you may not get a "new" code because perhaps the old one is ongoing, just not displayed? Could there be a wiring/connection issue? I do agree that the Evap (and the CCM) are usually the last to be set. I hope you find the cure to the issue and keep us informed. Good luck.

Well, it took 592 miles but the Secondary Air System finally tested and passed. Yahoo!
I have no idea what condition finally made it go as it happened with just normal city stop & go traffic.
Anyway, got it through emissions and hope I never have to go through that again.
