Hi all,
My high mileage 3.2. X300 has a weep from the differential half shaft.
I have can’t find the filler / level plug on the differential to top it up.
I presume it is on the aluminium finned back plate below the breather but I cannot see itIs this correct and is it easily accessible without major disassembly?
with thanks
Alan
Yes, in the rear cover plate. Should be a plug with a 3/8" ( I think) square recessed hole. It's either 3/8" or 1/2" so a standard ratchet head fits in it.
Here's a photo from eBay showing the rear cover of the GKN Salisbury 15HU differential in your Jaguar. The fill plug is the round rusty part at the lower right with the square hole in it:
Like Jagboi64, I can't remember if the hole is 3/8" or 1/2" square, but a standard ratchet or breaker bar will fit it. You may need a short extension.
If you want to change the oil, and your drain plug has a 1/2" square head, you can slide a 1/2" socket extension onto it and use an adjustable wrench on the other end to turn the plug out.
The leak from the half shaft seal usually indicates that the output shaft bearing is worn. It can be replaced without removing the differential.
