Smile Air pump

Since I live in an area that doesn't test would there be a problem in removing the air pump that is located just above the alternator? It would sure de clutter that part of the engine bay. Your comments are always welcome.

You'll probably get a CEL and code P0411. Or at least you *should*.

I ran with a dead and unplugged pump for several months. The engine management system may have sensed the disappearance but didn't seem to care at all. The engine ran fine.

Hi guys.

Agreed with Doug. The code will turn up eventually, but the engine will run fine.

The pump's purpose is to heat up the O2 sensors quicker, via air injection to the exhaust, during a cold start. This gets the ECU into closed loop fueling quicker, which is more efficient than the pre-mapped "engine cold" running. It also helps to burn off any excess fuel in the exhaust during pre-mapped running which is better for emissions too.

I don't like the way the pump cycles on and off, even when the engine is hot. Air injection is not needed then.

Bottom line, I run with mine connected for the cold start benefits, AND to avoid the CEL.

Hey guys,

Nice to see this post; My car is starting to generate a little whining noise. This noise is RPM related and is not going away. I hear the whining noise much better inside the car then outside the car. Listening with a piece of wood against my ear it is the air pump I suspect.

How can I be sure it is this pump and not something else?

My hearing is not as good as it used to be, so with the wood or hose against my ear I still find it hard to find out whats making the noise.

Thanks in advance!

Maraud

Just unplug the pump; it's electric.

If the noise goes away........

The pump is electric and should not cycle up then down as RPM's rise and fall...if it's RPM related I doubt if it's the "one speed" electric pump.
