Default Car shuts off while driving

Hi,
It has been extremely hot here in NYS and my car has cut off twice while driving and once at idle. It restarts with no problems.
I suspect that maybe it is my fuel filter. It probably has 130,000 miles on it and I WILL replace it soon. I remember how much fun it was changing it on my other Jaguar- A full hour just to get that filter off and then maybe 20 minutes to get it back on. I'm getting too old for all this fun.
Hmm, rethinking, if it was a fuel problem then I would feel the engine running out of fuel. The engine is running fine then it is just off. Between running and it turning off I feel nothing at all.
What might the problem be?
Thanks,
Jomo

Could be the EGR. I had that happen to me on the highway one time. It did grant me a code finally. It had done it a few other times, but always at stop lights and such.

Crankshaft Position Sensor does this too.

Also could be a dead spot on your TPS.

It turned out to be my inertia switch. Whenever I jiggled it the car shut off. I bypassed it for the next couple of days (no highway driving!) to make sure that is the problem. Either way I will put back an inertia switch in the car.

If it makes you feel a little less bad ... Fuel filter change on the XK/R (2010-15) requires dropping the fuel tank. Dropping the tank is best done dropping the rear suspension.
Who'da thought?

If that is the case, then I am selling my xk/k immediately and I don't even own one!
For the record, the fuel filter is easily see-able after removing the rear tire (I think it needs to be removed(?)). Probably when the car was new, this was a 10 minute job. However, after 25 years the bolts on the bracket-well they are now part (as in welded) of the bracket and forget about those fuel lines.

G'day Jomo,

Glad it turned out to be an easy fix. I had a similar problem with a SIII XJ6 years ago and it was dirty contacts in the Inertia Switch, I just cleaned them and and the car was good to go. No need to buy a new switch.

Cheers,
Jeff.

Jeff,
I still want to drive the day for a few more days to be sure that it is the inertial switch. Right now the switch is bypassed and all looks fine. Before bypassing it I jiggled the switch about five time and the car shut off each time.
With the inertia switch physically in my hand, I hit it a few times and each time it tripped. It seems that the switch is fine. So why is it bad? As you suggested it has to be dirty contacts. I will certainly clean those contacts before putting it back in the car.
I will update everyone in the end.
Jomo

Hi,
Sometimes I don't think too logically but today I did.
When I jiggled the inertia switch my car was shutting off. So I bypassed the switch and the engine did not cut off when I jiggled the wires that I spliced. I pulled out the switch to see if when I hit it the unit tripped and it did. So I decided to wait a few more days to see if my engine cut off again. What was I thinking? Today I cleaned the contact on the switch and plug. I reinstalled the switch and now when I jiggle the switch/wires the car does not shut off. Problem solved.

The inertia switch has a history of being fickle

Once it acts up I would recommend just finding another one as a reset is not always a fix from reading other's history

If you take it apart you will have springs flying everywhere

Ask me how I know
