Center vent removal
Is this as easy as just pulling it out? Searched the archives with no luck. Somethings making noise in there when going over bumps and I'd like to pull it and have a look but don't want to "force the issue" and break something. Figured someone here has been there before me. Thanks
I don't know how similar our '93 XJ40 may be to your '97, but below is a link to photos I took of the process in our car. I hope they're helpful.

Spring clips on both upper corners, perhaps on lowers, too, but I can't remember. Not that similar to the XJ40 as the louvers and wood are all pinned together as one assy.
Thought I had some pics but can't find 'em. Will go have a gander about the shop and if the old piece is easily located, I'll snap you a few.

Bob,
That's so helpful, since all of us just happen to have one of those handy-dandy tools in our kits! :-)]
Looks like you could duplicate the function with a pair of right-angle solder picks, crochet hooks, or maybe even a couple of long thin screws with their heads inserted first?

Don

I've got the same rattle in my center vent, and one or two of the "vanes" on the right side of the assembly no longer move/adjust in sync with the other vanes. So I suspect they have broken off the mechanism, and that may be what is rattling.
Did you find your rattling problem after pulling the vent?
Did you rig up something to pull the vent out? I bet a piece of wire coat hanger bent into a "U" with hooks would do the trick. I made a similar tool for Mazda Miata vents to pull them from the dash.

Use 2 pairs of long nose pliers. Tightly grip the centre horizontal vane in each vent. Pull & jiggle slowly and firmly, it's a tight fitting but it will come out. I've had mine out a couple of times using this method.
Cheers
