Default Coolant color

Hey,
Which coolant do we need for our cars? Is it green or red(ish)/pink? I used G12 that's used for VWs, is that OK?

Regards

A search for "coolant" in this and other forums will read like an "oil thread".... lots of opinions and lots of truth, but still not a lot of absolutes.

Here is the latest "coolant" thread which has a lot of good info:

For cars the age of the X300, one can choose to use the old "green" coolant, or newer long life coolants. All will work. However the trick is that they shouldn't (and in some cases can't) be mixed. If one chooses a given variety, then make sure the system is completely flushed clean before switching.

And beware, "color" doesn't necessarily tell one what type of coolant you have. Typically "green" is the old school coolant we all grew up with, and "yellow" or "orange" is the new long life coolants. But there are "green" long life varieties, and there are sub-varieties of the "yellow/orange" to be aware of as well.

I'd recommend some research into the various types of coolants and decide which is best for you.

For me, I've got the old "green conventional" coolant in my 97 XJR. No real reason other than that is what was in it when I bought it, and I don't feel like flushing it out. So I'll just drain and refill every year or two, which really isn't a big deal.

They all work well, its just whether you feel like draining/refilling every 2, 5 or more years.

But personally, I trust "fill and forget", "sealed for life", etc less than something I can refresh every year or two as part of a springtime service

This. Brand name doesn't mean much either as many manufacturers make different coolants for different specs.

Best bet is to go by the OEM's specification. If it's not listed on the product label, it's probably not suitable.
