Most autoparts stores can read the codes for you and tell you at least what the code is. The code may not be the actual problem, but it can point in the direction of the problem.

When I smell gas and don't see an obvious gas leak from a fuel line, fuel injector, etc or a pre-cat exhaust leak, I always suspect O2 sensor.

I have moved your thread from the forum for the X308 to the forum for the X300, which is the Jaguar factory project code for your 1996 XJR6. Here you will find knowledgeable owners of similar cars.
If you will please post the actual diagnostic trouble code (DTC) as it appeared on the scanner, we'll be happy to help.
I'm attaching the DTC Summaries manual which gives definitions and possible causes of each code.
Cheers,
Don
