Default Hard steering

Hello, I have a 95XJ6 and when its cold out its hard to turn the wheel at times. I noticed this happens only when its cold out, after 1-2 mins the steering is fine again. Could it be the power steering belt?

On your car the p/s pump is mechanically driven so there's no belt to worry about.

How's the fluid level?

Beyond checking the fluid I'm not much help.

Ages ago it was common for rack and pinions (on some cars) to develop "morning sickness"....stiff steering when cold. This was due to the type of internal seals used at the time, as I recall.

I thought problem, if that's what it is in your case, was a thing of the past...but maybe not?

Others will chime in with better information.

Cheers
DD

Doug is spot on.

I add to this, how old is the power steer fluid, dont know, then change it.

I have had this simple process sort many, many evils with power steer systems, and not only on Jags.

Simple to do, get some Synthetic auto trans fluid, about 1ltr, or so, syringe the old fluid out of the cannister, refill the same cannister with the fresh fluid. Do it again in about a weeks time, then again another week later, jobs done. Now put it on the annual service sheet.

Of course many other gremlins may be giving you grief, but the X300 system is pretty bullet proof, but stale fluid will kill that alloy ZF pump in no time.

I will do this, is it better to use trans fluid or PS fluid?

Specification calls for Dexron ATF.

I have a ton of old "Type F" ATF that I use...works well. Not sure if official PS Fluid would be better.

I tried P/S fluid, it did NOT like it one bit. NO idea why, as the old Saginaw pumps love it.

It had the terrible groans, hot or cold.

Since I run Synthetic ATF in them all I have huge amounts available, so I tried it. It took 3 suck and refills to get the "groans" out, but since than, perfect.

My local NAPA parts store owner recommended Dexron 3 so I used NAPA syn ATF - and this was 6 months ago - and it works just fine.
