Inspection fail?

Cool Inspection fail?

I went to get my jag inspected today and was told that 5 parameters weren't ready to be tested.obd monitor readiness status is coming up not ready for catalyst, evaporative system, o2 sensor, etc... My mechanic told me I need to drive 80 miles and come back. Anyone have any ideas?

Just keep driving it. These cars take a while to be ready.

Well, the drive 80 miles story only applies if the ecu was reset either by someone with a scanner OR by a battery disconnect. If you have done neither of these recently, then you have a condition that will not allow the drive cycle to complete, and you must get a diagnosis of why. You didn't mention if the CEL was on.
How about "the rest of the story"!

Ok sorry for the lack of info. There is no Cel and the car runs great. Now I did do a battery disconnect about a month ago or less. I haven't driven 80 miles distance since then however. It's been short trips only, 5 miles here, 2 blocks to the store. It's also possible that when my mechanic worked on the suspension recently that he disconnected the battery. Not sure really.

OK- well, the OBD test cycle- the mileage you need to drive and a at what speed is posted somewhere, but I can't find it right now. In general, in one outing you need to have a 1/2 to 3/4 full tank of gas, drive for several miles at 40 mph without too much acceleration or deceleration, drive at 45 for 5 miles and alternate. then a few 5 minute idles and a repeat usually gets it for me. I will continue to look for the actual drive cycle definition for the XJ6.

Ok thanks spark! I will do some research, seems like a big undertaking! I havent done that since i bought the car, maybe thats why my gas mileage is bad too!

Default Service Drive Cycle

I suggest you purchase the Workshop DVD from Jaguar Daimler Heritage Trust. It contains a wealth of information, including (in the Electrical Diagnostic Manual) a definition of the Service Drive Cycle, which I think is what's being discussed here.

This page in the PDF on the disc is a scan of the book so I can't easily copy and paste. Put briefly, it involves letting it get to 60 degrees (presumably starting with it having been driven in to the garage, i.e. hot), idling for 8 minutes, giving it wide open throttle up hill in drive in no higher than third for 10 seconds, then drive around until you've performed 40 gear changes. Then drive at 35-45 mph for 3 minutes on the flat. Park up and idle at 1500/2000rpm for a minute, idle for two minutes and then check for fault codes.

There's the machine gun approach of just driving and then there's the methodical approach:

Note the warning at the bottom about the number of drive cycles that may have to be covered to complete catalyst monitoring.
