So it seems there is something leaking and i have no idea where to start. Can anyone chime in with me and help me figure this out.

 

 

That’s the trans mount area and it’s wet from the trans pan or output seal.

In your photos, it does appear that your transmission oil pan gasket is leaking. The transmission input or output shaft seal may also be leaking. One confirmation would be if your transmission fluid is low. The pan gasket is easy to replace. The output shaft seal is more difficult, and the input shaft seal requires removal of the transmission. So before you address the issue, you'll need to determine where the fluid is leaking.

If you search the X300 forum you should be able to find good instructions for replacing the pan gasket.

The three fluids I recommend for use in your ZF 4HP24 transmission are Redline Oil D4 ATF, Mobil 1 ATF, or Valvoline Dex/Merc (the non-synthetic version in the blue bottle, not the synthetic version in the red bottle). These fluids are all good substitutes for Dexron III, the fluid originally specified in your transmission.

It's easier to diagnose where the leak is coming from if all the old oil & dirt is cleaned off with some degreasant first. You can then sometimes see the actual leak but at least see the colour of the oil. Engine oil would usually be somewhere between honey colour & black, depending on how recently it was changed. Auto trans oil is red. It could also be from further forward & blown back as you drive along, so could be power steering oil (usually red as well), but you would see that on the steering rack or PAS pipes as well. Another alternative is to park it over some clean cardboard, the oil should drip somewhere near the leak to give you a better idea where it's coming from & you should be able to see the colour of the oil on the cardboard too.

 

Notes taken i will be degreasing and inspecting this weekend after work. I will keep you all updated.

 

Would any of those tie into why the a/t failure light keeps coming on and off ?

 

Low fluid level maybe.

Remove and clean the connector too. Push out an inch then twist the tab.
