Oil Pressure

Oil Pressure
Hi Folks, back for more fun and frolics. The other day the oil pressure on my sons 96 XJ6 began giving him an intermittent oil light ON. He says it comes ON, then OFF as he went up a hill We checked the oil level and it was at medium. So we topped it off and it was OK till today. Today his pressure gauge went to zero and then back up again, but no light came on. He has the car at work right now so I haven't checked the levels yet today. Any ideas? Besides a bad pump, could it be a loose wire? Anybody has this happen where it wasn't a pump issue?
Thanks!!
Bobby

Hi all. Thanks for the assistance with this. We replaced the oil sender with a new replacement with the resistor. Advanced auto parts "URO Oil Pressure Switch URO-006193". It fixed the problem of the light randomly coming on when driving, and it worked fine for a few days, but now the oil light comes on at traffic lights (when the motor is idling) but turns off if/when he puts it in park (faster idle). When my son first had the oil light problem he threw in some Castrol synthetic that was originally purchased for my wifes Hyundai Sonata. 5W-20 I think. I suspect that oil was thinner than required. I want to change his oil with something a bit thicker, so I'm looking for suggestions as to what oil to use??.. I'm also wondering if we should turn up the idle a bit. How would we accomplish this?
Thanks so much!!

AJ16 should probably be at a 40. If you live in hot weather climates, 20w50 would do great.
I use Castro’s Syntec 0w40 all year round. I used to switch between a 50 and a 40 depending on the season, but the Castrol 0w40 seems fine.
20 is too thin. Get it outta there. I wouldn’t even use a 30 in there.
