The Repairs Continue
I love my XJ6. I really do. Despite the fact that I've (somewhat) let it slide in recent years. This summer has been a season of renewal for the old girl. For those of you interested in the ramblings of a crazed XJ6 owner, read on.
This summer I've spent time (and money) on the interior.
Accomplished so far:
- replace broken clips that lock sunvisors to the roof
- replace burned out bulbs in climate controls, clock, odometer, J-gate
- replace rear seat ac vent that was broken by my clumsy children
- replace the "frame" that holds the climate controls, radio, and clock - all six mounting tabs had broken off the original frame
- repair broken vane on front centre ac register
- tighten up bolts under dash to eliminate rattles
- eliminate rattles from overhead front console
Still to go:
Repair driver seat.
The seat controls mount into a plastic "bucket" on the side of the seat. This bucket mounts to a metal bracket via 3 screws. The bracket is riveted to the frame of the seat. The bracket snapped in half a year or two ago. The result of this is that the wiring harness for the seat controls now gets trapped between the seat cushion and the metal frame of the seat. The wiring insulation frays and the seat motors are activated randomly when the driver changes position while sitting in the seat. To solve the uncommanded seat movement I pulled a fuse. This stopped the uncommanded movement but had the unpleasant side effect of rendering the driver window inoperative (this was not a problem until recently when the ac compressor died).
I bought a used seat on ebay and my plan was to take the leather off my seat and put in on the ebay seat. Turns out that the ebay seat does not have the seat heaters so I'll remove some parts from the ebay seat and install them on my seat. I'm looking forward to having a moveable seat again. I'll document the surgery via photos.
Repair front doors.
The check arms are giving me trouble in both front doors. I've purchased new check arms and check arm reinforcement plates.
Repair Headliner
Sagging (of course) - will make temporary fix this year and recover it next year.
Rear window brake light.
The adhesive failed and the light is hanging down on one side.
Non interior items.
In the last 12 months:
-cleaned sticky throttle body
-replaced all 4 road springs - this raised the ride height by 3"
-replaced all 4 shocks
-rebuilt alternator
-replaced u-joints on rear axles
-replaced ac compressor
-replaced rear fulcrum bearings
-brazed oil pan to repair a hole that occurred when a bolt decided to try and invade the sump.
- replaced all 4 brake discs and pads
In the past 2-4 years, replaced
- cats and mufflers
- crank sensor
- O2 sensors
- throttle position sensor
- idle speed control valve
- coolant temp sensors
- transmission selector cable
- battery
The car is running great. Engine has plenty of power and an ultra smooth idle. These AJ-16 engines continue to impress me. Car also has ice-cold ac, a ride that's almost as good as new, quiet.
I'll stop for now. I'll add more later if there's interest.

Thanks Graham.
It is a long list but well worth it in the end. Well, worth it to me but probably not a great use of monetary resources. I've probably spent more money than the car is worth but I really like the car.

This is true. Fortunately I don't have to rely on the XJ6 being a sole daily driver so I can take my time with repairs and, more importantly, take my time when searching for and ordering parts. I can't imagine how much money I'd have spent if I had to get parts from a dealer.
How true!

Looks like you definitly are dedicated to your Jag. Not surprising. It can be addictive.
I notice you repaired a broken vane in the centre ac register. Did you do this yourself? If so, how did you remove the centre grill / register? I have a similar problem with my 97 XJ6.
Thanks.

I noticed you replaced the throttle position sensor. I would be interested in your experience in doing that job as I believe I need to do that. Did you need to have the computer reprogrammed afterwards? And where did you get the part?
