running very rich on xjr x300
hi there,
here is my presentation:
https://www.jaguarforums.com/forum/n...5/#post1237886
i have a problem on my xjr X300 , hope someone will have a solution!
my car is running rich....very very rich
my fuel consumtion is very high , and the car is smoking a lot .....a lot , black smoke , and it smells a bit fuel
i have about 112 000 km
have you any idea ?
as i live in new caledonia.....it's hard to find parts, it's of course the only one of the island, and have to import myself all parts...
...no need to say that i'm not very keen on trying a lot of things....;-)
thanks all for the support !
Vincent

Do you have a Check Engine light? Do you have a scan tool to read the codes? If not, a local shop can do that for you.
You might have a bad coolant temperature sensor, causing over-fueling (meant for a cold engine) when the engine is actually hot. The sensor is on top of the thermostat housing and its resistive output can be measured.
Or, maybe the O2 sensors have gone bad. If you have a scan tool you can check the function of the O2s.
How is the quality of the fuels there? Any troubles in the past with it? I bet it is expensive!

hello,
thanks for the ideas
yes, i have the check engine that is "on" when i start the engine, but shut off as soon as the engine is started
i have an obd 2 reader, doesn't give me any faulty code.....
my car is actually at the garage , we have to change rear shocks and front low arms bushing , i've given the infos to the mecano !
what should he read as resistive output on the temperature sensor ?
i thought maybe to a bad air flow meter ?
you can't imagine how expensive it is here !
just for an exemple, when i import something, i pay 40% import duty on what i've bought + shipping.........just crazy...
thanks a lot for the help !

At 20C the resistance should be in the region of about 3500 ohms. Somewhere between 3000-4000 is ok. If it doesn't drop as the temperature warms up, then the sender is bad. You can removed the sender and test it in a pan of boiling water and see if the resistance drops as the sender heats.

vincedecaledo,
you area brave man running an XJR on a tropical island!
How did an XJR end up there?
As you are close to NZ, are we the closest place for parts for you?
Beachams in Hastings, Hawkes Bay can source most parts.
Air Flow Meter is a difficult one - probably secondhand off UK ebay.
But it could well be your coolant temperature sensor, and they are not too expensive - in fact my mechanic may have a spare one he can sell you, if yours proves faulty (he had 3 when he was trying to sort out my XJR recently) - let me know. I can post it up to you, and you may avoid duty.

Thanks Al , thanks jagboi
Yes probably with Australia the nearest !
The xjr is a wonderful car , and everything is all right there , except of course for the roof wich definately hate heat , i ve done it on the jaguar store 4 years ago .( i let you imagine the price )... But didn't last and have done again 6 months ago, but this time differently , in black skai , and it should last longer , if interested, i will do some pics .
Otherwise , no other problems , except 3 years ago a big issue with the security module , car stucked , no starter, no injection, no more alarm, no central locking , ( jag new caledonia asked me about 4 000 usd for the part , without programming and mounting ) i decided to check myself, bring the module to an electronic repairer , and finally was fixed for 300 usd , only a few worn condensators to change , some tracks to repair because of the acid , and the car starts immediately !!!
For all spares , i generally buy from england, ebay or a few stores ..... But will enjoy to find in the near !
Thanks a lot for the proposition !!!
Thanks a lot jagboi for the datas, i will check that as soon as possible !!
Thanks guys for your help !!!
Again, if i can do something ..... You' re welcome!
Sorry for my bad english .... Not sôeasy for a little frenchie !!!
Cheers

With the engine hot ( 90C) it should be about 200 ohms. A quick test is to simply short the connector terminals on the wiring harness with a small piece of wire. Then the computer thinks the engine is fully hot and see if it will run better. Probably won't start if cold, but it might.

Had the car back from repair ( rear shocks and front lower arm bush) ,
Had some reading today and don ´t know if it's good or bad as it varies , but are not on the datas you gave me .....
Cold ( about 20 deg ) 2475 ohms
Hot ( nearly 90 deg ) 400 ohms
What do you think guys ???
Thanks a lot !!

Seems like too much resistance when hot. Here is a typical datasheet, and it shows 243 ohms at 90 C.

Cold seems right, but looks like it's getting lazy when hot. I would replace it.

what happen if i short the cable ? except having trouble to start ?
thanks
All it will do is tell the ECU that the engine is fully hot. There is no danger to the car. Certainly worth trying as a test!
Hi all ,
So , has done the test for a few days now ...... And no changes !!
Still smoking and smelling a lot .....
Bad luck !
Other ideas guys ?????

Could be the airflow meter, or the ECU. There is a history of water getting into the ECU connections and causing problems. It's located in the footwell on the right side of the car, toward the outside of the car. Sit in the right front seat, move your foot to the right and you'll be touching the cover the ECU is behind.
Unfortunately, airflow meters are not made anymore; the only option is a used one or a reproduction that you can see on Ebay. Note, it's different from the XJ6 meter, and not interchangable. Should be part number LNA1620AA.

The amount of excess fuel you are describing sounds more like the TPS (throttle position sensor) out of adjustment or gone bad, engine temp when cold maybe a little extra fuel, air flow slight adjustment on the mixture but the TPS tells the ECU to pulse the injectors at a set rate in accordance to the butterfly valve position. In simple terms it thinks your wide open throttle (WOT) and is injecting fuel at WOT rate, you could try starting the engine then unplug the TPS the ECU should have a basic map for idle and see if that makes a difference or listen for the injector pulse with a mechanics stethoscope. The TPS is a bugger to get to on the XJR so good luck and keep us posted
Thanks guys for the answers .......
Just bought a second hand MAF from england .....
About the tps , if it goes bad , will i see it on a obd2 reader ?
I just thought of buying a wifi elm 327

Do you think i will have infos on that ??
Thanks a lot !!

I have heard bad things about the wifi OBD readers I would defiantly read the codes before I threw anymore parts and money at the problem, could be something as simple as not firing on all cylinders, coil pack down and your dumping unburnt fuel into the exhaust hence the smoke and fuel smell
hello all .....
So the news ...... Quite nothing
Just bought some new spark plugs champion RC12YC , can't be bad , and is part of the normal service .......
Bought also a good second hand MAF from uk ( ivan from Partsforjaguar on ebay is really a nice guy , i buy him a lot of parts for a long time now , and every time very great , so just a free ad for him !!)
Also bought a obd2 reader wifi , it s not a big invest and can t be bad for the car , can help also on other cars ..... Not a big deal !!
Everything is shipped, i m waiting for delivery, not easy on an island !!!!!
Also
Of course i keep informed !! Thanks guys for the help !!!
Any genius idea is welcome. ;-)
Cheers
