Default X300 Manifold shield removal

Hello there, I’ve been getting a few fume smells in the cabin of my x300 when accelerating and think I may have a cracked manifold as the car is running a bit rich in my opinion. I wanted to try and get a second hand manifold off a friend so that my local mechanic can put it on but needed to check the part number on the manifold, I’m not sure if mine is air intake or egr fitted etc. I need to know how to remove the heat shied first so I can actually see if they are cracked before I get my friend to post them to me.
If anyone can tell me how to find out which manifold I need in terms of air intake and EGR and also how to remove the heat shied, many thanks for any help.

There are 5 bolts on the shield that covers both fwd and aft castings # 1 - # 3 and # 4 - # 6 cylinders

2 separate castings

the 5th shield bolt is down low

Thankyou for your quick reply, will have a go taking it off tomorrow. Is it likely it will come off with ease or may need to spay the bolts to loosen up first? Thankyou

The bolts come off easy and the manifold casting for the US model ( at least my 96 ) contain both EGR and secondary air injection intakes ( smog pump )

Have you checked the valve comer for gasket leaks as the gasket gets old

Thankyou again for such quick replies, I’m in the UK so not sure if egr and smog pump were standard here or just blanked off, I was hoping once I have the heat shield off I will see if the manifolds are cracked and if I can source the correct manifold as I believe the part number is on the manifold.
As for the valve cover gasket, there is a slight oil leak around it so does need doing at some point.

I got the heat shield off easily Thankyou for your advice, clearly a large crack in both the front and rear manifolds. I’m looking through online to get a second hand set but unsure what I’m looking at!
when I took the cover I could see both the front and back have a small metal pipe going into them near the bottom, I assume this is something to do with egr and /or air injection. I found a front manifold which has the same model number but the bottom hole is not drilled out? Can I use this? Thankyou for any more help.

The 2 small threaded bosses on the lower part of both fwd and aft manifold castings are for the EGR

The threads are fine pitched and a pain in the *** so assemble with care

on the rearmost part of the aft casting is the secondary air intake

In this link you will see the one bifabricated hose for the secondary air injection ( # 11 ) and the two solid tubes ( # 5 and 6 ) for the EGR bosses with a split off line

https://www.jaguarclassicparts.com/u...-3-2-4-0-litre

Casting numbers ?

Some European models depending on country do not have a mix of these EGR or secondary air systems on the engine

A USA model has both even though it is a 4.0 liter engine as the 3.2 is the same engine block

Thanks for your quick reply, the casting numbers on the forward were 2/11M6/HC3 and part number NBC2902AA/CA and the rear I couldn’t totally see but I think were 45B7/HF4 and part number NBC2903AA/CA.

I can only seem to find the front manifold available but without the egr hole, can this be blanked off as I think I’ve read or can it be drilled out? Thankyou

To drill out a new boss would be very difficult in lining it up as the spot and the angle as it is very difficult to line up a existing boss to thread the fitting into

Blanking options depend on your emissions inspection requirements and your elimination of the system knowledge / practice

The EGR is open above idle and secondary air is open for a short time after start up by a timer , I can be wrong
