1998 xjr crankshaft position sensor replacement, any tricks?
I have the no start issue and code once the car warms up so I ordered both the camshaft and crankshaft position sensors. How the F are you supposed to replace the crank sensor ? Anyone have any trick other than taking the motor out?
I'm considering cutting and soldering the leads by the sensor and than shrink wrapping them and dipping them in liquid electrical tape. It looks like the newer models come with a redesigned sensor where there is a plug right at the sensor. What a PITA.
The later sensor that has the connector at the sensor itself is electronically compatible so you could splice a connector from an AJ27 salvage car. I have done this as the connector for the AJ26 is located at the rear area of A/C compressor.
I even have a substitute 'link harness' and later sensor I made for diagnostic purposes.
I personally have never seen a faulty CKPS but DTCs and wiring problems sometimes require substitution of parts to eliminate the possibility.

Well I have the sensor already so splice it will be. Both the sensor and the connector are accessible. It's the wiring in between that is impossible. If the CKPS sensor doesn't do it than the TB and fuel rail are comming off for the Cam sensor.
I eneded up soldering and shrinkwrapping the new sensor in.
For those who run into the same issue, rockauto carries the newer style sensor and a connector if you want to convert to the newer style.

It was an intermittent problem so time will tell. Usually it wouldn't want to start once warmed up. Yesterday I tried to recreate the condition, but it kept running. I'm not able to drive it as I have the car apart for some rust repair and paint.
