98 XJ8L Rear Rattle
I have a 98 XJ8L that has developed a deep sounding rattle that is coming from the rear right corner of the car. It is ABSOLUTELY driving me crazy. I have gone as far as removing everything from the trunk, panels, spare tire...literally everything and still cannot track this noise down. I have also looked under the car for anything unusual. I am stumped and cannot find it. Any suggestions would be GREATLY appreciated. This deep sounding rattle only occurs on bumpy roads and only sounds like it is coming from the rear pass side. Please let me know if you have had or heard of anything like this.
Thanks.

have you looked carefully at the rear of exhaust system and the exhaust hangers 2 on each side
one right behind the bumber cover and the other above the rear suspension
doesnt take to much of a bump to the rear of the tailpible to dislodge the pins on the exhaust from the hangers mounted to the car and rear subframe
let me know what you see

wheel bearing? When mine went bad in the front, it sounded like a mix between scraping and rattling. If the wheel bearing is bad, the brake disc will scrape the dust shield, which kind of sounds like rattling.
sounds like a common shock noise.. if the rattle sounds like it is in the floor of your trunk then it needs a shock... i ve also seen the rear monostrut mounting welds come loose and rattle.. but sounds like a a faulty shock
last night just got 5 .. got one with that brugandy interior .. looks funky. sexy car.

Thanks for the ideas. In response, the car has a set of KYB shocks in it that I installed early last year. Not that old...as far as the exhaust, I have put the car in the air and looked all around and grabbed and shaken as much as I can and cannot replicate the noise. Here is where it gets really strange. I left the car parked for about a week and went and drove it and it is not doing it now. After I drive it for a couple of days in a row it seems to come back. Could it be a wheel bearing? I jacked the car up and can move the rear wheels a little bit. Not a whole lot, but they do have some play in them. Just not convinced though.
Ok, eventhough it has a fairly new set of shocks, the more I hear this ANNOYING sound, the more I believe that it is either a bad shock or a shock mount. It does sound like it is either the pass side rear floor or coming from inside the trunk. I will have to pull that all apart and see. Thanks again.
id say bad shock.. and little play in the rear is normal.. also check your faulcrum bearing.. the most bottom bolt closest to the ground.. make sure there is no play..both sides
Hi just some info i have a 2000 xj8 and have had it with 2 mechanics trying to resolve a rattle from both rear wheels, Initially we taught it was wheel bearings, then shocks, then wear on the hubshafts but after alotvof head scratching i think we found it. There is the slightest amount of wear in the knuckle joints on the two rear drive shafts and this seems not alot until u go for a drive then it amplifies 100 times.
