Default 99 VDP Door Key Operation

When I first purchased my 98 Vanden Plas the key switch operated the locks and windows but not the sun roof. I have since fixed the issue with the sun roof but now the key in the door operates nothing. I have done Hard Resets in between to fix other issues but this one remains. The door locks and windows operate normally from all other options just not the lock cylinder. Do I need to program the lock or is there a different module this could be bad in the door?

Any help would be great. Thank you.

Also does anyone know if the Garage Door Opener controls will work with newer openers? I have tried programing but it will not work. Any programming tips or tricks to get it to work?

My wife's 99XJ8L works our garage opener. The opener is about 3 years old and programing the door opener was very simple. Push a button on the door motor assembly and then push one of the 4 buttons in your VDP's overhead console. Each of my remotes has a different code assigned to it by the door opener transmitter.

Did you have to do anything besides pushing the button on the overhead console? Key in a certain position while pressing something else at the same time?

No, on the opener board where the wires connect there should be a button and some instructions. Essentially all you do is push the button and you will have about 30 seconds the push your remote button you want to assign. My opener is a Chamberlin fast open model. It opens quickly and closes normally. I have 4 remotes and a wireless key pad programmed and according the instruction book that came with it all remotes have a different code in it assigned by the opener’s transmitter.
Good luck

My homelink-like capability works perfectly -- but the instructions must be followed religiously. Most modern garage doors now use a rolling code system -- this requires quickly exiting the car and programming the door motor, as described in the owners' manual (avail on the stickies at the top of the forum if you do not have a copy).

You have to push the "learn" button on your garage door opener motor before you push the button in your Jag. It is usually a red button accessed by removing the light cover on the motor mounted to the ceiling.

Then, in my case, I had to re-program all the other openers in my other vehicles at the same time because this wiped them all out.

Check your garage door opener manual for instructions specific to your model and follow the programming instructions in the manual for your Jag.

You will realize that it is simple to do once you have done it successfully, but you have to get all the steps done in order and get each one done in the allotted time. On most garage door openers you only have about 30 seconds to program the remote once you hit the "learn" button.

Perseverance is helpful.

Good luck.

Download the PDF file for the 1999 Jaguar owners manual (drivers handbook Note: 1998 & 1999 are the same handbook):

Information on programming garage door is pages (in pdf 74 to 76) in handbook pages 72 to 74.

Forum member testpoint (Tom) comments from another thread about electronics issues in the Jaguar:

"Perhaps the car's electronic logic would benefit from a reboot by disconnecting the battery for a minute. That would be a good time to check the battery voltage.

Strange window operation is a first sign of voltage that drops below what the modules can tolerate. How old is the battery?

What is the battery voltage under cranking load? Less than 10v charge or replace the battery."

Also another different thread:
Forum member xjat8 comment:" battery...get it load tested, it should be normally 12.7 to 13.2...The correct type for these cars is a sealed Calcium 100A/hr 880CCA mother.
90% of these faults are caused by an undernourished or wrong type of battery."

I replaced the original battery in our 2001 XJ8 in 2009 with a maxx-49n ($80.00 plus tax) that I purchased at our local Walmart store.

It is still going strong with no issues.

Look at this article about the EverStart Maxx battery warrantee period seems to vary based on local walmart store locations:

This my 3rd and last post on batteries in this thread:

Here is a photo of our maxx battery and I added information about battery cranking amps (CA) and cold cranking amps (CCA):
