Asc and trac not available w/abs light on...
This occurs periodically and then goes away for months at a time. Might this be a dirty or faulty sensor issue? Any guidance here will be greatly appreciated ! Also, anyone have a sudden acceleration issue as I just had a scary one myself ! Fortunately I had my foot solidly on the brake. This has never happened before and my foot was on the break not the accelerator pedal. I put the car in neutral and it revved really high then simply stopped..and went back to normal. I am now afraid to drive it...for certain. Any help on these issues is of course truly appreciated. The car is a 2003 XJ 8 with 150,000 miles on it.
I don't know about the sudden acceleration (possibly related, not certain how), but its well documented on this forum that there are power connections to the circuit board inside the ABS control unit that are commonly subject to the solder joint failing. When it does, it will be intermittent at first, progressively getting more frequent as the shocks and vibration of driving shake the wires loose from the board. It will show those two messages and the error light. Its a dirt cheap and simple fix (BTDT) to open the unit up and re-solder those wires to the board (some guy even made a youtube video showing how, tho there are cleaner ways to cut the unit's lid open) but few people are comfortable attempting it. A shop would just replace the unit but at considerable expense. If not comfortable soldering circuit boards, you can remove it yourself and then just find some electronics whiz kid with a soldering iron.
This is a common problem and as pdupler states, it is usually the ABS module suffering from weak solder joints. As Lady Penelope points out another cause could be the wheel speed sensors need cleaning. These are easy to do, and a good maintenance item, but money is that the ABS module is the root cause.
Check out post # 3682 at this link, there is a walk-thru of how to remove the ABS module, and a link to specialists who will repair and guaranty the module for $45.00 (You do not want to buy a new one, they are around $2,900!)

Again...thanks. I found a repair place on Ebay, Modulerepairs in Van Nuys Ca. $49 for the rebuild of my module. They have 100% positive feedback with over 14,000auctions ! Regards.....
I don't know about the surging, but the abs fault is a common problem, check "carnival kid's" recent posts, he sent his abs unit to a company in california for a rebuild, at a very reasonable price.
I did mine myself. Many threads on here to tell you how, and on Utube....
With my mechanic Son in Law’s tool help it took 1.5 hours to get the module out, 20 minutes work to get it apart and soldered, and 30 minutes to re-install. Fixed the problem once and for all (so far - 7000kms).
