check engine light and restricted performance on hwy
I've had my check engine light on for a couple weeks and just started getting restricted performance when I acheive highway speeds. I checked the ODB2 codes and here's what we get:
P1000
P0171
P0455
Any ideas? I was thinking it sounds like a mass air flow sensor for one, and the vent solenoid for the other. For a couple mins today I thought I smelled gasoline, but there was a city bus in front of me, and it did go away. How would I go about testing both of those things? I'm used to working on Cadillac Fleetwoods where I don't have to worry about that stuff.

On the way home from work the Restricted Performance light went on again at about 70 mph. It went off after about 2 mins and I went to pass someone. As I was passing and accelerating from about 62 back up to 70 I heard a loud crack and the car decelerated about 10 mph and the light came back on. Scared the hell out of me. When I got home I looked and there was what looked like a small ammount of dried oil in the air intake tubes. throttle plates are kind of dirty too. MAF sensor looks alright. is that dollup of red/brown stuff in the middle of the metal sesor supposed to be there?
It did this also with sports mode on.

Don't use carb cleaner on the MAF, its okay on the throttle body if there is no coating on yours. Carb and intakecleaners have solvents that can damage plastics and your MAF can be ruined by this. Only use electronics cleaner or CRC MAF cleaner or similar on the MAF. You needto get the obdII system scanned in real time (engine running, on the road) with a laptop systemto see if the MAF, O2 sensors, or something else is out of range. If you guess, you will become a sensor parts warehouse at high cost and frustration. The MAF is a suspect, the scanner will hone in onthe causethough. The evap system is all over the car, in the front and at the tank area and in the tank flange.

They said there is no leak and did not check the canister close valve. They refused to smoke test it becasue they said its not a problem and the code that came up for them was not associated with that, it is associated with a vacuum leak. Sure as heck came up for me though! They are going to replace the MAF with a used one. I'm letting them do it because if that light is still in and I bring in my ODBII scanner and I get the P0455 I'm going to raise all hell.
