Have a 1999 xj8 vandon plas a 1988 xj8 and have a 2002 or3 x-type on the way home now. Wondering what is the best code reader unit to get. Have looked around and they all look almost the same. Was also thinking about one of the harbor freight units as they are here in town close by. Will get off the net if price is good. Just a poor boy with a few toys as daily drivers with my son. Thanks All!
There are many options if you have a cell phone that's smarter than mine. I have the Ultragauge, which I mount in my cars with a simple bracket to allow monitoring of temp and fuel trims as well as read and erase codes.
I think the best solution is a bluetooth ELM 327 scanner (I have a cheap, blue V-gate) connected to an Android phone with app called Torque - you can easily find it in the Android Market.
For me the free version of Torque is good enough - you can scane engine for fault codes, delete them, it shows lots of live-parameters.
The V-gate scanner can also be connected to a laptop with programs like PCM Scan or ScanXL - works perfect with my Jag and lots of other cars. (exept my friends Volvo V70...)
Another wireless connection to the data port is the FORScan software. It uses a WiFi ELM327 converter rather than bluetooth but seems to have more Parameters ID's (PID) than TORQUE Pro. Next on my list of toys.
While I have two other OBD readers I always have a $10 converter plugged into the data port and an android phone in my pocket. Does everything that a dedicated reader will do and more. Gonna put much of the $100-$200 code readers out of business.
Won't write to the ECM . . . yet . . . but you can write simple custom PID apps for display on the smart phone.

I have been trying to find one that will read all the XJ X308 systems.
Email reply from UOBD2.net:
"Neither the V138 JLR Mongoose SDD Pro (Item No. SP205) For Jaguar And Land Rover or the V138 JLR Mongoose SDD (Item No. SP116) will not work with 2001 Jaguar XJ8 X308. Only support JLR after year 2005"
But forum member DonB has successfully installed and used JLR Mongoose SDD on his 2004 Jaguar Xj X350.
That seems to agree with the information I found on one of the other websites selling the JLR Mongoose SDD:
"1999 and up model years range for Jaguars.
ie: models X100, X150, X202, X250, X350, X351, X400
1999 & Up Jaguar and 2005 & up Land Rover"
Specific Module Coverage for Jaguar XJ (X308) (2000-2002)
Read, Diagnose and Clear Extensive Diagnostic Trouble Codes (DTC's) including Engine, ABS, Airbag and much more
· Read Live PCM Datastream
· Fast Refresh rate for better Live Data Readings
· Comprehensive Help - including DTC Library Database
· Retrieve Vehicle & Module Information
· Support CAN (Controller Area Network) and all other current OBDII Protocols
· Multilingual menu and DTC definitions - English/French/German/Spanish/Portugese/Dutch
· Software Upgradeable via USB 2.0
Summary, I am still not sure if any of the above will do everything I like it to do for my Jaguar XJ8 (X308) model:
Power train CAN network (ECM - Engine Control module, ABS/TCCM - Antilock Brake / Traction Control Control module, TCM - Transmission Control module, Gear selection illumination module, INST - Instrument Pack)
Body systems SCP network (BMP- Body Processor module, PDCM - Passenger Door Control module,
PSCM -Passenger Seat Control module, PRDCM - Passenger Rear Door Control module, SLCM - Security and Locking Control module, DDCM - Driver Door Control module, DSCM- Driver Seat Control module, DRDCM - Driver Rear Door Control module, INST- Instrument Pack) - Any coding of Body system modules?
What about accessing Adaptive damping control module, Climate Control module, Intrusion sensor, Restraints control module? Any key and remote programming?
Final note: I want to be able to read the stored codes in all the Jaguar modules, also recode them and the keys
Sorry to put so much into one post.
