Need a bit of help on my Jag. 4.0 aj27 motor 1999 Vaden Plas. Found the crankshaft (flywheel) turned it many times to find the triangular arrow indent. Did not see it anywhere in the flywheel. Did see where someone has put some orange paint and not far from that I seen a white line that someone put on the flywheel. How do I set on the correct place so I can put the heads back on the motor. I broke a secondary timing chain and it bent two of the valves. Had the heads repaired and now ready to put them back on and can not find where the crankshaft should be at. Need help on how to set the lower end of motor before I put heads back on. Thanks all for your help.

 

You will not find the triangle on an AJ27. If you look into the crank position sensor hole (obviously with the CKPS removed!) you will see one of the timing "holes" is slightly rounded on the ends, while the others are perfevtly rectangular. That the one. It does not sound like you have the tool to push into the hole to hold the crank. I would highly recommend getting one!
You know, it would be helpful if you could describe what you heard (if anything) before the chain broke, and how many miles were on the car, and how often you changed the oil (just kidding on that one), to help those who are in denial about the need to update their secondary tensioners.

 

had the car for about 4 months (yes changed oil about 2 months after buying car ) I do have the tool got a set off ebay. Just wished they had a (where this parts goes) instruction guide. Thank You to telling me what to look for as all the info I have gotten did not tell me to look for the slightly rounded ends. The chain did not do anything was easing from a stop light when I heard it break and I did not try to restart it as I know that sound from experience with other vehicles. Would be nice if Jaguar would release good info on the cars. I enjoy this car and plan to get an XJS also as soon as funds will allow. Thanks

 

Have you downloaded the JTIS manuals from the "Stickys". That and this forum will take you where you need to go with repairs and maintenance on this car!

 

Yes I did and have looked through it and did not see the info in that manual. And oh think car has 130K for miles on it.

For sure it is. Am looking forward to getting home to find the place on the flywheel so I can continue the rebuilding process of getting the car back on the road again. Miss that comfort so much!. Thanks again and will post again if I get stuck.

 

yeah I had the same prob, no triangle but then after rolling the flywheel around a couple times, noticed that one hole had the straight sides to it so i knew that was it!

Thank You, found it when I got home last night. I do have the right setting tool as I got a set of the tools for the 4.0 motors. Thank you so much, now on to getting the heads back on the motor.

There are some good "Stickys" on the rest of what I asume you are doing, which would be the timing chains. Also, there are some good step by steps on the web- Use Google or check back if you dont find it right away.

 

Will do thank you guys for all the help. I have down loaded any different PDF files on the timing chain replacement. I did get new head bolts for the heads but I got the ones for the lincoln LS. They look the same as what I took out of the motor to begin with. Just need to look up the torque poundage and the sequence they are done. Some of the info in the course code:168 is a bit confusing but I will press forward. The next thing to get is a 3/4 to 1" ratchet to torque down the bolts. I broke all the 16mm sockets and a couple of 1/2" ratchets taking them off.

 

Make sure you notice the head bolts are a torque, followed by a set rotation in degrees- again, check back if you cannot find it. I don't have it in front of me right now.

 

This is what I found in the 168 manual AJV8 Engine Assembly p 21. Think this is right no matter if the bolts are Jaguar or Lincoln LS motors. I tried to put a pic of that page but dont know how to insert a pic in this message
