Default HI question about valve timing a jag v8

HI I have a question I have a 1999 jaguar v8 , I placed the crankshaft timing tool where the crankshaft sencor is and I have cyl heads off car , Number one is not at TDC and the crankshaft keyway is facing at bottom of motor , Is this correct ???, I thought when the tool locked the crankshaft Number one would be at TDC , here is pictures of crankshaft keyway relationship with tool locked into carnk sensor hole and where number 1 piston is , does this look right ? I would of thought number one would be TDC it is not ,
also when I install cyl heads I put the cam flats facing up and bolt tools on where valve cover bolts are to hold camshafts there and then put the tool into the cam phaser and rotate counterclockwise wise is this also correct? I would of thought when crankshaft tool fit piston would be TDC for number 1

Look here tool is locked in and a picture of crankshaft keyway when it is locked in and also picture of where number 1 piston is I know with Mercedes and bmw to check valve timing is always with number one at Tdc , and pretty much all motors I had apart prior just looks weird to me but I am not Jaguar mechanic first motor I had apart thanks for help all the help with my questions , LOU

Concerning the timing, that’s the way it’s supposed to be. It’s in service mode. The crankshaft sprockets need to be a lot closer to the oil pump though. Carry on with reassembly.

That'd have confused me too if I ever got that deep in one of these.

Please find and download my copy of the Jaguar Engine Training Course 168.pdf.

It is all over the internet.

Recommend installing mls head gaskets from a 4.2 instead while it's apart.

HI update I finally got my valve clearances in spec boy it was hard to get proper shims , dealer would not help , we went to Hyundai I learned they use 30mm od shims ,motor cycle shops ect , finally I found a set of buckets which go over the valve springs with shims on them I removed and miked them up and now all intakes AT .008 AND EXH AT .010 . I am waiting for 5 key ways as I lost 4 and ordered a spare as well ,

Ok so I am updating thread as I got new head-bolts , they are proper length thread ect but original ones are hex head . the new ones are a female torx , Did Jaguars newer ones go to torx ,? I work on Mercedes they actually also use stretch bolts like toque then a few 90 degrees to final tighten , Here I did what you guys said but on Mercedes you never had to change them ,, I remember yrs ago I had 2 snap on a caddy and it turned into a nightmare , I always change hardware when its required .,

One thing valve keeper prices and shims very expensive compared to say Mercedes but also parts hard to find for me , but maybe because I did not have the list of venders I now know , I think if I do another it will be much easier to do ,
