Default Hood/Bonnet Latch Stuck

I know I have read posts on this over the years, but my pass side latch will not allow the hood to open. Driver side normal. Is there a temp fix so I can check fluids, and a permanent fix so I can lift the hood?

Remove wheel arch liner, drill hole CORRECT spot, pry latch slide to release bonnet, disassemble latch, insert cable and squeeze tabs to prevent cable end from coming out again, reassemble latch and liner, DONE................................

There are threads on this site (with pics) for the hole location.

I had a customer (maybe from this site?) that used a LOOOOONG drill bit and drilled completely through his XJ8 ECM.
The engine ran but had MANY fault codes.
Luckily I had a spare ECM so I replaced his (after I got the bonnet open) and performed the IMMO SETUP.

Careful where you drill.

I would advise not drilling the hole, there is an alternative way to access it and get it open. I saw one other guy post something about it and I was determined to figure a way in without drilling. I was post photos but basically there's a small opening if you remove the wheel liner and you can go through there and theres another hole and if you go straight in there with a long flat blade screwdriver you should be able to pop the latch. It took me about an hour on the drivers side and then about 20 minutes on the passenger side when that one broke 2 months later 🤦. Also my fix was to install a generic door rod clip from the used clip stash at my dads shop. You may be able to go around to some body shops in town and find one. I'll post some pictures so this makes more sense.

This is what you can see once you remove the wheel liner

This tab you have to bend towards the outside of the vehicle a bit and there should be a hole right inside there. You can see the middle section of the hole in this photo

Here you can see light coming through the hole that you need to put the screwdriver through

Here's a reference photo of the backside of the latch along with my fix. The silver part of this needs to be pushed towards the rear of the car

Here's my hood latch and the generic door cable clip that I used

Good luck! And don't lose hope because I gave up like three times on the drivers side until I finally got it, and once I knew I could do it I still have up one the passenger side a couple of times before I got it.

Please help me understand Kroeker’s pictures here. Older thread, but I’m trying his technique. I see the half moon shaped tab, and I see the hole in mine where light is dining thru on his. Is that jagged looking hole the hole he’s talking about? Am I supposed to aim the screwdriver straight up to find the latch? How long of a screwdriver are we talking? I can get my screwdriver in the jagged looking hole and it strikes something but I don’t know how close I am, or at what angle I should strive for. Thanks all. Hoping not to drill but it may come to that.

Ok never mind! I have a bore scope and I couldn’t find a path to the latch. So I drilled a hole about 1.75-2” to the rear of the push pin hole for the fender liner. A short moment later and I had it popped! I’ll return to my original thread to list the details. Pretend I didn’t resurrect this thread!

Dang you should've waited a bit longer. But for future reference it's the jagged hole you go through and then there's another vertical hole after your screwdriver goes through the jagged hole.

I circled the second hole you go through hopefully for more clarity.

Yup, I just turned the wheel removed the back half of the liner and you don't have to drill any holes to get access to it. It might seem impossible at first but Id be willing to bet if you kept at it for 30 minutes you could get it open with needing to drill anything.

Here is hoping that many here can avoid the issue altogether.

I found these grommets on Amazon. Fits perfect. I recommend doing this instead of squeezing the forks together, because mine broke when I tried to squeeze them. The size of the grommet says H-M4, whatever that means.
