From sitting inside point of view, the left hand side fog light has been out for a while. I never really use the fog lights.
I decided to replace both sides with standard 9006 bulbs. Had to take of the wheel to get access. Not too bad of an operation.
Undid the clip, turned anti clockwise, replaced.
It didn't seem like any wires were bent or off.
I tried to turn on lights but still the left side doesn't work.
Any ideas what the problem might be?
Konnichiwa, ....You will need to trace the socket with a multi-meter to see if you have power going to it. Since it hasn't worked in so long it may have corrosion in it or have a bad wire and/or socket plug. Being one works, I'd meter that and that will tell you the same voltage for the other. I say that because if there is corrosion in the socket, you may get weak and/or intermittent readings and you need a known voltage. Check the pins from the input to be sure none have pulled out or are damage.
If you find you have corrosion, there are sprays you can get from electrical stores to possibly help clean it out (not guaranteeing they will work) and ask the store if they have other suggestions. I know Japan has many options when it comes to electrical components from being there a long while back.
If this doesn't work you may have to purchase one to replace it. I did a quick check on eBay and used ones are running about $50 in the US here. If you want new then check SNG Barratt... https://www.sngbarratt.com/English/u...rnedDown=false ...thing is if you get a new one it will shine brighter than the other for awhile until road debris catches up.
Arigato gozaimasu!
When I took out the old one, I actually did spray some electronic component spray on connectors for this purpose. But that didn't help.
The car has always been stored in a garage but of course you could have a possibility of corrosion on some small sockets. By the looks it all seemed quite clean.
I'll take some pictures.
I don't have a multi-meter but I might have to get one.
Are there any other things I should check? This can't be a fuse right since one side works?
I still have a small, truly cheap (maybe 220 yen) multi-meter I bought at the Nihonjin equivalent of Home Depot, outside of Kami Seya NRRF, in 1980 . . . So desu ka!
Thanks. When I went to the local auto supply shop to buy the bulbs, I did bring the old one and they were kind enough to check it for me with a multimeter. They told me the old one was actually OK.
The socket and connector on old bulb didn’t look too bad and no visible corrosion or mice.
I just double checked: Yes, it is ONE fuse only for both fog lights: It's fuse No. 17, 15A. (And relay No. 2). Both are in the front fuse box.
I had to double-check that, because there are separate fuses for L and R low beam and L and R high beam...
I too recommend that you get yourself a multi-meter - they are really cheap. Check, if you get power to the bulbs.
Apart from corrosion it is possible that the wire going to the bulb is damaged somewhere (either internal wire-core-breakage or openly torn somewhere. Maybe even chewed through by rodents (rats/mice). Also check for corrosion in the inline connector.
I had some time over the weekend to go through this. I sprayed more electrical spray and checked the connections with the multimeter.
Perhaps it was the ground that was causing it to not light up. Anyway it worked.
I changed the right side bulb as well.
My XJR is looking good now.
many thanks for all the help. I’m love this site.
