My Gas Cap Doesn't Have A Magnet?? 98 XJR
I didn't notice until after I bought my 98 XJR that the gas cap was missing! YIKES! Previous owner said that he didn't have it anywhere. Ummm, OK. Called the local Jaguar dealership and they had one in stock so I bought it. However, now that I have been thinking harder about it, there is a magnet sticker on the fuel door and I saw some USED gas caps online that had the magnet on the bottom of them. It was a completely flat bottom and a brass colored magnet.
Well, my gas cap does NOT have this. Did they change it along the way and it no longer comes with the magnet or what? The part number is NNG5942AG and the gas cap fits fine and it also has a "whip" coming off of it that is supposed to connect to a hole somewhere so the cap doesn't get lost. I see nowhere that this little whip can connect to. I know there are different caps for the 97-03 and 03+ so I'm wondering if they sold me the wrong thing or if this is what they sell now??
Gas cap has a "nipple" in the middle of the bottom. If it had the magnet, it would be completely flat...however, it is flat on the bottom except for the middle, which like I said has a protruding plastic "nipple".

Not sure I can be too helpful as I am no where near my car - but my XJ is a '98 and the fuel filler flap has the round section on it to attach your fuel cap to when filling up. My fuel cap has a flat underside which you can attach to the flap whilst filling. The cap is quite small and does not have a plastic tie to attach to anything.. I do have one picture of my cap with me (yes I am sad in that way - pics on my works pc of both my X-Type and XJ lol) in the hope that this may help

Mine is just like the picture posted above. There is a yellow sticker where they want you to put your gas cap (magnetic one). There aren't supposed to be any nipples on the magnetic ones....which is why I was confused initially. I am thinking I was sold the wrong part, but I don't know if it will have any adverse affect by running this type of gas cap opposed to the magnetic one that was originally intended.

Shouldn't really matter if you have the magnet sticker or not. If you have a fuel filler cap with the nipple, you can use the small hole in the latch instead.
This is the best picture I could find. In the pic on the right, it shows a magnetic cap, but you can also see the top left corner of the cover there are two holes. The outermost one should hold the cap

The later X308 (somewhere around MY2000) have a short plastic dowel that fits into the fuel filler lid latch tab.
When the filler lid is opened and vertical, the cap fits on the plastic latch tab to keep it from getting lost.
The older caps have a flat steel base that is attracted to the filler lid magnet.
I have a 1999 with the flat steel base and my wife's 2001 has the short plastic dowel.

The caps themselves are 'INTERCHANGEABLE' but the way to retain them during fueling will be lost.
Set them anywhere you want but be aware that they might 'roll off' if you don't fit them and drive away!!!!
Some caps on later models have plastic retaining straps and simply 'dangle' while refueling.

I have a new cap the same as yours ( the X other half left the original at the petrol station? )
Do not worry too much, as it is nearly impossible (at least on my 98 XJR ) to get the fuel nozzle in the filler neck with the cap on the magnet.
The local Jag breakers wanted £35 for a used cap! The main dealers sold me the new updated one for £12!

I had to remove the magnet on mine because it was interfering with the cap and the flap would not close completely nor flush. As someone else already pointed out I could not refuel using the cap on magnet anyway, so off it went. I put mine against the metal of the bottom of the boot. Maybe that's where yours is too...
