Default Oil change - what's more important, time or mileage?

I pulled my XJR out of the garage today for it's annual State inspection and tag renewal. Washed and vacuumed and then drove around for a while. It drives PERFECT, I should really make the time to drive it more often!

I have an opinion question.

I love to change oil and have been adamant with all my cars, especially the Jaguars. I just passed 1 year since my last oil/filter change in my XJR but I've only driven between 2k and 3k miles. The oil on the dipstick still looks brand new; like it just came out of the bottle.
I used Mobile 1 full synthetic 0w-40 and a Mann oil filter. Should I feel bad about deciding not to do another oil change right now?

On the subject of oil changes you'll get a hundred different responses.

My 2 cents worth is that it's better to change the oil than not to change the oil.

Synthetics are supposed to have a life up to 10,000 miles.

I don't think oil "goes bad" in a year.

BUT...........for what it costs, and for peace of mind, I would change the oil (and filter) every 3,500-5,000 miles, or every year, whichever comes first.

99 opinions to go

The answer to the time vs mileage question is "yes"

I think the time recommendation is more oriented towards cars being used in a lot of low-speed, stop/go city driving, where they may not be putting up a ton of miles, but the engine is still spending a lot of time running, idling, etc.

FWIW I'm on 8 months/4k mi since my last change with full synthetic and don't have any worries. I may replace it in a couple months, mostly to make sure I don't push too hard since it's the longest I've gone since doing my timing job. Did a couple rapid oil changes after that to flush (~500mi, 1k mi), then a 3k mi change, then put the oil in I'm running now.

I think in your case I wouldn't worry about it too much yet, but again it won't hurt anything except your wallet to do it now. If the car ran for a couple months after the change, then sat for 10 months, I might lean more towards an oil change sooner. Otherwise, there shouldn't be any issues I could think of.

I just went through my 1st ever bore wash episode from a fuel flood w/ new 500 mile synthetic oil. I'm debating should I change when it returns from paint.

I think you should change your oil every time you have a repaint!

Should have just used regular old dinosaur oil. It's already what, 65 million years old?

Yeah, what does a year or two matter now?

So despite clean looking oil I went ahead and did an oil/filter change since it's been over a year. It's fun and remarkably easy to do on an X308 anyway!

My oil cooler feed line (goes towards right side of radiator if facing the front of the car) is damp. It's leaking but not enough to hit the floor and not enough to have any noticeable effect on the oil level. I priced a new one a couple of places and they are over $200, has anyone sourced a new one or successfully repaired an old one? I'm not going to worry about it until the next oil change but at that time I'd like to have a plan to repair/replace the line.

I had the same problem. Bit the bullet and ordered new ones from SNG Barrett. Replacing them should be straight forward, unless the nuts on the cooler are stuck. Like the one on mine. Have a look here, enjoy:
