Smile oil filter for 98 XJR

Hi, I have a 98 XJR and heard that it may require a jaguar oil filter, then my jaguar mechanic, (who has done great work for me over the years) told me it doesn't apply to the 98 XJR. What's the skinny? Thanks in advance to who ever replies, Mike

I echo Bob's suggestions. I like Wix filters and they're commonly available at O'Reilly Auto Parts.

The "Jaguar" branded filters are not made by Jaguar, they're made by third-party original equipment suppliers like Mann+Hummel, Bosch, Mahle, Valeo, Visteon, Delphi, etc. The Jaguar-labeled filters I have on hand are for the X350/S-Type and they're all marked Made in Germany, so they're probably made by Mann, Mahle or Bosch. NAPA carries Mann filters, and if you compare a Mann filter to an OE Jaguar filter you may be surprised at how similar they are....

Cheers,

Don

Aw... too much sanity in this thread so far! Usually, a good oil filter thread can get as much hysteria as a motor oil discussion.

Do all the above have the back flow valve, what brands do not?

. . . since be are going to get an oil filter debate going.

Perhaps we need a banned list of subjects. oil, filter, coolant, convertible top sealant, etc.

I use what ever comes free with a 5 qt container of oil on sale as long as I can see the valve.

I've been using Wix for several years now, on all my cars and the boat which has oil and two fuel filters. The quality and price are excellent. I only recently found out that O Reilly has Wix, but you have to ask. They put the Fram on display.

They keep the Wix filters behind the counter with the other items for adults only.

I should have mentioned earlier that some of the Wix filters are marked Made in Germany just like the Jaguar-branded filters...

I have the WIX in my car now as they are half the price of the MANN Filters that I prefer. The prices of the MANN have gotten a little stupid locally ($30+) vs the $13 of the WIX.

If you can plan ahead, RockAuto carries the Mann W 713/29 at $13.78 and the Wix 51228 at $9.83.

It also pays to keep an eye out on eBay and Amazon. Here's a listing for the Mann at $15.57 with free shipping on orders over $35.00:

Amazon.com: Mann-Filter W 713/29 Spin-on Oil Filter: Automotive Amazon.com: Mann-Filter W 713/29 Spin-on Oil Filter: Automotive

Cheers,

Don
