Power steering pump whine

Default Power steering pump whine

I had to replace my power steering pump last year. The old one was gushing fluid like crazy. After the repair, it had the typical whine sound as if it was pumping air every time I turned the steering wheel. I cranked the wheel fully left and right several times, drove it, did it again, etc, but it never really stopped whining when the wheel is turned. I parked it for the winter, and got it out last week for a drive on a nice day. Still has the pumping-air-need-to-be-bled whiny sound.

Did I get a bad pump? Is there a special way to bleed out the air that google is unaware of in these cars? Other thoughts? Thanks.

Have you checked the fluid level? None of the Jags I have been around exhibited a significant whine, so if the level is correct the pump may be faulty.

This is the filling and bleeding procedure. It is done with both front wheels off the ground.

My original pump gave out on me last summer and I installed a "reasonably priced" Amazon special, which worked well but did relatively quickly start to develop the moaning noise all over again. It came with a 1 year warranty and after a bit of correspondence with the reseller, I have a warranty replacement pump sitting on my bench waiting for me to have some free time. I'll be doing as thorough a fluid change as I can manage when I put the new one in, on the off chance that whatever was inside the rack and plumbing may have been contaminated.

Could be I bought a cheap pump and got what I paid for and might have to do it a third time next year. Could be I didn't do the above procedure and I left an air bubble trapped inside somewhere.

Be aware that the reservoir has a filter incorporated that could be 'clogged' causing cavitation?

I replaced the PS pump on the Duchess with one from Rock Auto.
To my surprise, the new pump was had far more noise than the old
one. It's not terrible but it is noticeable. (to me)

I did not know that. Searching the workshop manual, the only reference to a filter that I saw said that the reservoir "incorporates a 10 micron, lifetime, integral filter". How would I service the filter? Thinking I would remove the reservoir and clean it up in a parts washer maybe? I suspect that by gently flushing cleaning fluid through the hose ports would probably clean it. I have an ultrasonic parts washer too which might work better. I will definitely go down this path.

I will also follow the bleeding procedure more carefully as M. Stojanovic posted, and hopefully between those two things I can eliminate the noise. Otherwise I might have to tackle the pump again.

I guess you could 'backflush' the filter or just replace the reservoir if it is REALLY clogged.

Bob, do you know if the power steering reservoir filter is a steel mesh screen or a paper type filter?

Never cut one apart but it looks to be a white foam type block in the bottom of the reservoir.

You could maybe test the filter's flow rate by just putting a catch under the supply hose outlet and dump some clean fluid in the top?
