some dumb timing questions
2001 jaguar xj8 103xxx miles still running strong. im doing this as a precautionary maintenance. (everyone says to replace timing chain tenioners before driving any further)
I am about to start a timing chain tensioner job and have a few questions to throw out there (some might be dumb). I will buy all parts once i have everything needed to complete this task.
1. Am i going to have to remove all coolant from the engine or just a little so when im taking the hoses apart they dont spill everywhere.
2. If i do have to remove all coolant can i add a different type once drain(car came with universal fluid and would like to use the recommended stuff).
3. Am i going to have to remove any oil ( after job was complete on plan on doing a oil change anyway to clean the little plastic pieces out.
4. Could i get away with doing this job if i leave the coolant hoses on that run across the driver side engine.
5. I would like to just replace the timing chain guides and tensioners only, no chains ? Is that possible? Will replace chains if i see wear.
6. I would like to leave the hood on if possible?
7. What do i do if when i open it all up and the camshaft locking flats aren't flat or at the top. Turn them? From all the videos and forums ive never seen the whole process of installing camshaft locking tool.
8. Do i really need the car on ramps?
9. The set i purchased ->https://christophersforeigncarparts....ing-in-one-box doesnt seem to come with new bolts for the secondary tensioners ? Where can i buy new bolts or maybe a fastener for the gaps.
10. Do i have to remove the thermostat or water pump? Just remove the hoses connected to them?
11. Tools needed? I have a small tool collection.
12. Is this a good cam tool kit meaning does it have all the main tools.
Help is extremely helpful in any way
The most important question of all them to me is all the tools i need to buy.

Why do you want to remove any cooling system components? I just protect the radiator matrix with a thin sheet of steel when removing the crank damper after the fan assy is lifted free. I also don't remove the bonnet. (just tilt it higher)
You can remove the coolant and some hoses if they are in your way.(I don't)

1. Am i going to have to remove all coolant from the engine or just a little so when im taking the hoses apart they dont spill everywhere.
You will need to drain the coolant, simply undo the plastic drain plug at the bottom of the radiator and drain into a container.
2. If i do have to remove all coolant can i add a different type once drain(car came with universal fluid and would like to use the recommended stuff).
The recommended fluid is Pentofrost SF, I'm not sure how "flushed" the old fluid has to be to change to the Pentofrost SF
3. Am i going to have to remove any oil ( after job was complete on plan on doing a oil change anyway to clean the little plastic pieces out.
If I remember correctly you do not need to drain the oil, but should drain and replace after the job is done, so may as well do it first (just make sure you have a sign on the dash saying "NO OIL!"
4. Could i get away with doing this job if i leave the coolant hoses on that run across the driver side engine.
You will need to remove the large radiator hoses but not the thin hoses that go the reservoir
5. I would like to just replace the timing chain guides and tensioners only, no chains ? Is that possible? Will replace chains if i see wear.
It is a lot of work to do this job, you may as well replace the chains while you are there......but you don't have to.
6. I would like to leave the hood on if possible?
It's possible, but MUCH easier with it removed
7. What do i do if when i open it all up and the camshaft locking flats aren't flat or at the top. Turn them? From all the videos and forums ive never seen the whole process of installing camshaft locking tool.
You will need the alignment tools to lock the camshafts in the correct position with the crankshaft.
8. Do i really need the car on ramps?
You will need to go underneath the car to access the crankshaft positioning tool, so yes you do need to have the car raised either by ramps or jacks and jack stands.
9. The set i purchased ->https://christophersforeigncarparts....ing-in-one-box doesnt seem to come with new bolts for the secondary tensioners ? Where can i buy new bolts or maybe a fastener for the gaps.
Are you talking about the primary tensioner bolts, the lower ones that you dispense with the backing plates? Check your package as there should be new, shorter bolts included in the set from Christophers. They are usually in the small boxes that contain the new tensioners.
10. Do i have to remove the thermostat or water pump? Just remove the hoses connected to them?
You will need to remove the water pump, and should probably replace it. You do not need to remove the thermostat housing, but you should replace the thermostat.
11. Tools needed? I have a small tool collection.
You will need a comprehensive tool set.
12. Is this a good cam tool kit https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B0...M4Z0JYGM&psc=1 meaning does it have all the main tools.
You do not have to pay $79.00 this one from eBay is $43 free shipping https://www.ebay.com/i/303234969385?...CABEgJ2q_D_BwE
You will also need the crank holder and puller tools....... https://www.ebay.com/itm/JAGUAR-LAND...AAAOSwEbxccVzq
And a NEW crank bolt needs to be tightened to 275ft lbs. Harbor Freight sells a 250ftlb torque wrench for $99 (less 20% discount) https://www.harborfreight.com/12-in-...nch-64064.html

If you have owned the car since new and know you have never changed the tensioners then by all means got for it. If you just don't know whether they have been changed or not then pull the cam covers and check to be sure you have the metal ones. First it is quick simple check and if they have been changed you are probably set.
I have attached a copy of the engine building course that details all the steps you need. The engine course is to large to upload. If you would like a copy drop me a private message with and I can send a link to my drop box and you can download.

And here is a link to an excellent walk thru by Blackonyx...........
Tmingi chain and tensioner replacement
Tmingi chain and tensioner replacement
My paper student guide (three ring binder) I got attending Jaguar training course 168 was converted to .pdf by a local copy company that scanned and loaded the document to a CD. I think I paid something like $20 or $30 in the mid 2000s
I sent it to GUS and he has it on his site. I also uploaded it to this site so it is EVERYWHERE on the internet.
Not hard to find if you look. (your welcome)
P.S. I also have Engine Training Course 180 in three ring paper form but it is for the V8 only so I never paid to have it converted to .pdf

Thank you for the help and that how to directions by Blackonyx are gonna come in hand or probably my main guide. I am planing on taking my time on this project (seeing i have another car ,a beater to drive to work). I have no records that the previous owner replaced any timing chain tensioners so my guess they are still factory plastic bodied. I will remove one of the cam covers to see if they look like they've been replaced. probably not
If there still the plastic factory ones i will confirm my purchase (i didnt buy them yet, i was waiting to ask for your guys tool and kit sugguestions). The only area about the job im alittle fuzzy about is when taking all the front pulleys off, and the whole part about the crankshaft pulley , im just confused about what exactly im doing. So i buy the tool to remove the crankshaft pulley bolt and pulley then what? But what locks it? Do i lock it where i took the pulley of or a different place? Or once the pulley if off i just leave that area and remove the timing chain case?
Maybe another thing when i first take off the cam cover Should the flat sides Always be up (or flat level for the locking tool) or is there a probability im going to have to turn the engine or something for when i put the camshaft locking tools on (both). Also if i do end up replacing the chains and do remove the gear(and vvt gear?) on the end of the camshafts is there any specific way to turn or put back on also including the bottom gear sprocket thing.
Maybe last thing (for now) is if im not replacing the chains do i have to remove the gear things at the end of the intake and exhaust cams? If not that will save me alot of work. I was thinking once i had it opened id just one at a time replace the old tensioners and guides? Bad idea?
Sorry ima a noob at this stuff only other engine ive worked on is my 2.7T v6 in my audi. And working on that is hard because its so crammed under that small hood.
