Default Sunroof problem

The sunroof on my 2000 XJ8L recently developed a problem. Whenever we go to open it, it will open and then close immediately. This happens using the tilt feature, one-touch open, or press-and-hold. It does its open thing, stops for about a second, then closes up tight. Prior to the last week or so, it had functioned flawlessly (and it gets used every day)
Any ideas where to start on fixing this?
Thanks
-Steve-

I don't have a sunroof and these are older check procedures, but something to check...

Take the Negative battery cable off the battery and hold it on the positive post for 10 seconds. My 2000 did that every time I would use the master key to open the driver door? If I use the remote it never happens.

I should mention that this problem started happening simultaneously with the driver's window not working. My wife reports that she went to open the window -- it made a click noise but nothing happened, so she decided to open the sunroof instead. This was the first time the sunroof had caused any trouble. All 3 other windows function normally.
I don't know that these 2 issues are related in any way, but it's worth mentioning just in case...
Thanks

Had a similar issue w/ SR & driver's window. Pull fuse #15 from drivers side rear heel board & reinsert. This resets the drivers door control module.

That is exactly how I reset my 1999 XJ8 when the Driver's door module 'acts-up' and the window fails to operate.

I used to disconnect the battery to perform a 'hard-reset' but the trip odometer goes to zero and I like to keep it 'current'.

Doing this hard reset will also fix the the driver window issue.

King Charles,
I just went out and did the fuse thing -- everything works now. Thanks! Hopefully it will stay that way..
Gran Torino,
I hope you were referring to a hard reset performed by removing BOTH cables from the battery and touching them together. That will drain the electrical system and reset everything. It will also cause you to have to reset all radio and seat presets.
What you describe, touching the nevative cable to the positive post without disconnecting the positive cable from the battery (and I do hope you forgot to mention that last bit) will at best-case fry a bunch of fuses, and worst-case blow up your battery in your face and fry half the electrical system. Arcing across the terminals is basically arc welding, and no good will come of it. I would not recommend trying it......

Disconnecting the negative battery cable from the negative battery post as grantorino62 describes will not result in a short circuit of the battery. Because the negative post of the battery is then not connected to anything. Whether the positive battery cable is still connected to the battery doesn't matter in that case. You would have both negative and positive cables electrically connected to only the positive post of the battery, resulting in zero potential (zero voltage).

OK, I see your point. Still not comfortable with that whole idea though......... The fuse thing fixed it, at least temporarily. And my wife is happy, which is the most important part!

I found my problem was somewhat tied to a battery issue as well, it would resurface after the fuse trick every 6-8 weeks or so. Once I went w/ using a battery tender it hasn't reoccurred going on 3 years now.

Hopefully between daily use and a 1-year-old AGM battery my issue will not re-occur. So far, so good!
