thinking of selling 42K miles 01 XJR "R"
bought the car brand new. Anthracite on Charcoal interior
Full, documented, Autolux leather interior due to Jaguar misleading advertising
I added the full "R" package with silver Milan wheels
All options such as Navigation, dual rear blinds, too kit, etc
Interior is like brand new and no ding or dents on the exterior
Thinking of $12K..... ?????

Kind of held on to it for awhile for a "misleading advertisement"...must have liked it enough for the last 17 yrs?
IMHO, if I had a firm number, I'd put it up for sale for that and not budge in The Marketplace. Because from how you write it, you seem to have a desire to keep it unless your price is met?

Let's clarify the situation.
You're THINKING of selling. You aren't ADVERTISING the vehicle FOR SALE here in the model forum because that would get your thread deleted and a 7 Day Ban.
You must therefore be seeking opinions your proposed asking price before listing it in PRIVATE For Sale / Trade or Buy Classifieds forum ?

Jaguar advertised the car has having way more leather than the car really had.
Jaguar paid for a full leather interior and I have documents including letters and check from Jaguar to back up my claim.
Yes, I'm seeking opinions on what a fair and realistic price would be

Thus, no matter how you feel you were deceived, it bears noting you kept it for 17 yrs.
Have you done the tensioners and chains? Have you replaced the plastic thermostat housing?...amongst a few other things.
So if you haven't done this, then you are as responsible as Jaguar for not updating it.
For what it's worth, my opinion is, an XJR of that mileage, and assuming "excellent"- to-"mint" condition, could bring close to your $12K figure. I guess a lot depends on the service history and "updates" done to the vehicle, (tensioner update, water pump, thermostat housing, etc), But somewhere between $10K and $12k is not an unrealistic asking price, Buyers will be few and far between, but those asking prices are not unrealistic, although you may have to settle for a little less if you do want to sell the vehicle in a reasonable time period.

My suggestion would be post it on an auction site like ebaymotors with a ridiculously high reserve and a ridiculously low starting bid. Then if you get two or three serious bidders who've actually come and seen the car going after it, then you'll soon know the maximum the market will bear. At that point you can consider lowering your reserve to match the top bid. If you don't get any serious bidders, then then its just not the right time in the market or the right buyers just weren't paying attention. Wait a month or two and post it again.

learn your Jaguar, XJR do not have plastic thermostat housing.......
Then in accordance with what GGG is asking, we cannot offer an opinion on a vehicle we have not seen or driven. Thus, it should be placed in The Marketplace at a price you feel attainable.

Luc ... sounds like a nice one. Remember reading your interior story on a past thread ..... do you have other Jags ? Seem to remember you have interior (wood) parts.
Guess the car has been in a garage ? Not driving it much?

Didn't know that. Your low mileage and condition are your assets. The right/smart people will pay premium dollar for a car with your conditions.

I believe the market value for X308 XJR's is only going to appreciate. It has value to older Jaguar enthusiasts who look at it as a continuation of the XJ Series I-III. But it also has the interest of younger drivers, who have discovered the car as a tremendous performance value for a reasonable buy-in.
The one thing all Jaguars have in common is it is much cheaper to buy a sorted low mileage model than to buy one with needs and then restoring.
Your XJR has a lot going for it, and I certainly wouldn't take much less than you ask. There are buyers out there, but it has to be presented in a proper manner. Take a lot of high-resolution photos and spend some time describing it. A video helps a lot.
Pictures of the underside and under the trunk mats are a must to prove no corrosion.
Mark my words; These cars at the beginning of a market upturn.

One can by a used 2015/16 Toyota Corolla with around 42K miles on it for around $12k. If you do, you become one of the zillion or so people tooling around in another totally unremarkable little Japanese "box".
Where am I going here with this observation?
Assuming that one is not buying a daily driver that is needed every day to deliver pizzas or commute 100 miles a day to a "job" in no-where-ville then who in their right mind wouldn't jump at a chance to own and drive a top of the line and now increasingly rarer JAGUAR XJR which at 42K could be called an "old" but "new" car with the same mileage and price as a Toyota ?? Der......
IMO $12K is a ridiculously low price for a a gorgeous , loaded to the max , fire breathing super charged JAGUAR XJR with a mere 42K on it. Ridiculous !
I own a mint 2003 Black/Black XJR that first, I wouldn't think of selling and if I did I wouldn't take 5 cents less than $20k for it today and an even higher price in the years ahead,. Just my opinion but I think that my 2003 XJR ( last of the steel x308 beauties) which is in virtually "as new" condition is as good as it gets... It seems that almost nobody knew that Jaguar's dying brand from terminal reliability and cost of ownership horrors had been totally turned around and saved by HUGE Ford Motors money. Who knew ?
The result of this was an $80k XJR that had a terrible perceived reputation that no one wanted which depriciated in value to the point of absurdity and then becoming perhaps, the best luxury "super car" bargain of all time.
Remember ! only 15,234 of the X308 XJR were ever made in their 5 year production run for the entire planet earth. So now as the years pass the "market" realizes that the x308 XJR s were not the "problem cars" they were thought to be but rather fire breathing Jaguar rocket ships with timeless beauty and superb performance and reliability . Thank you Ford!
So here I go with another "opinion" but anyone sitting on one of these ever increasingly rare and extraordinarily beautiful x308 XJRs that has low mileage and like new physical condition that sells it for $12k might do well to have his head examined.
Just my 2cents...........

Rarity is only the supply side of the market equation and must even be tempered with alternatives or "opportunity cost", i.e. what other cool current and future collectibles am I missing an opportunity to buy. I'd love to have an XJR but like most gearheads, I've got a wish list that is far bigger than my garage. You have to consider what else is for sale that your potential XJR buyers might consider. They may be looking at a BMW 7 series across town, but most potential XJR buyers are also considering collector cars in a completely different category like some sports car they wanted back in high school. A buyer is thinking to himself, I might buy the XJR if I could get it for $12k because there's not a lot else that I like at that price. But go up to $20K and now there's a whole lot more other cool cars on the menu and then it suddenly doesn't matter if it were the best preserved XJR on the planet. The problem for the seller is finding the even rarer buyer who is obsessed with obtaining the perfect XJR and nothing else will do.
....to my point... with a grand total of 15,234 x308 XJRs with the last being built in 2002 16 years ago ( for 2003 model year) for the ENTIRE WORLD one must ask How many are still in one piece let alone drivable and let alone below 50k miles and still in mint condition ? Go shopping on line for a 2002 or 2003 ( best choices that have all the early engine liner and chain tensioner problems solved) that have below 50k and are in "like new" top mechanical and physical condition..... You can count them on your fingers that's if you can find one. and forget about $12k ...ain't gonna happen,
Yes there are a load of highly desirable collector cars out there but to me ( just my opinion again) cars like BMWs and Mercs are a dime a dozen... They're everywhere. Here in Boston where I live they are all over the place while one NEVER or seldom sees the classic x308 XJR even at the height of summer. There just aren't any around, Period!
When I drive my XJR around town even the kiddie "tuners" heads turn to stare with that "What the hell is that ? its gorgeous ! " look, ..... If its parked admirers say" Look ! the emblem on the hood ...It's a JAG ! Never seen one like this before". As said in a previous post if you happen to come across one of these increasingly rare big cats in prime condition , snap it up. There is now no where for the now tiny population of these cars to go in price but UP ! If you have the good fortune to own one now, hang on to it, enjoy the heck out of driving it ( sparingly) and watch what happens to its value

We recently had a 99 R with around 50k go for 10.5k .... some thought that was all the money and more ... it was a 99 .. and not a 03.
I watch the XJS market and the better ones are just starting to move a bit (couple K) .. W107 MB's are starting to really move. Excellent examples that could be had for 15k a few years ago are now going for 25+. Really nice XJS's are still available for 12-15K.
Sedans lag ... and older Jags being xj40's does not help. But, you buy the best if you are going to keep and an extra K ends up not meaning anything in the end.
The "R's" are the ones that will be worth the most in the future.

As a marker, I just watched Barrett Jackson Palm Beach, and a non-SC 2001 XJ8 with 36,000 miles crossed the block for $13,500 ($14,850 with auction fees).
If they are selling for that at auctions like Barrett Jackson, image what the sticker price would be on a dealer's showroom floor.

Someone got carried away ... and what did the seller end up with? We had a 13k 03 last year that sat at 15k ... although I think the car could have done that had the correct buyer come around.
Was it worth 3k+ more than the one with 30k I picked up. Depending on how it was used -- they could be equal.
I'm talking R's ... luxury cars of this age are hard for dealers to make money. They have to buy 70k examples for 2k and try and sell them for 7k with them sitting on the floor at 9k.

Barrett Jackson charges the seller $8% and the buyer $10% , so on this sale the seller would get $12,420, so not bad. The buyer paid $14,850, and Barrett Jackson got $2,430
As you say. dealers have to buy cars like this at bargain prices to be able to make sense of the time it may sit on the showroom floor.
A very nice car for the buyer though.
Perhaps one of the most difficult things about assigning a price to any car is what I would call "intangibles"? "aesthetics"? or to put it another way how one "feels" about a particular car. I think its obvious from my previous posts as to how I feel about our ( my wife who always has a name for our cars calls this one "Black Jack" ). ..... magnificent, last of the line X308, 2003 Anthracite/charcoal XJR. She says that for her, the Only proper color for a Jaguar is BLACK. I must say I agree.
I guess what I'm trying to say is that even if two cars are the same year/model/ mileage one of the cars always seems to have a different "aura" than the other and therefore makes putting a price ,especially on a unique car, quite difficult . . While folks may say that the market is X or whatever...To my wife and I there is no price for 'Black Jack"... Not for sale
The car is truly like new...42k miles with all brand new ( less than 1500 miles) Brembo rotors, Akebono pads and new Pirelli Rossi original tires all around. It really didn't even need replacements but keeping it "like new" is an obsession with me. The drive train is superb making the car "scary fast" and the interior is showroom. The car spends the hash New England winters in storage and is never driven even in rain.
And now you say "Wow this guy is nuts" .. Let me relate a brief story.
While stationed aboard an operating US Navy submarine ( see avatar above) at New London Connecticut back in the 60s. I bought a 1954 Jaguar XK120 from a shipmate.. When I got out of the Navy I made some nice money and bought a brand new 1970 Corvette 427 convertible and foolishly sold the Jag for relative 'peanuts"... Today, as most of you know, an XK120 is priced well north of $100,000 !. I promised myself that I would NEVER let another Jaguar that was becoming increasingly rare and headed for classic status slip through my hands ever again. Lesson learned.
We often think about just how many (few) "Black Jacks" remain in the world.
Anyone care to guess?
