Default Valve Tappet Shims AJ27 exchange

Bob,

Yes, I get the idea for the shims, the Stag has the same arrangement although the shims on a Stag are much smaller in diameter, located under the cam followers, not on top

Thank you very much for the offer to check on your supplies

Do let me know what you have for selection, and your terms for exchange / stock etc.

Cheers!

Glenn

Glenn the Coventry Foundation is friendly with JLR but we are a completely independent organization dedicated to our mission stated on our web site www.coventryfoundation.org. While Mike Cook was supportive and fully aware of the foundation he was not involved. The foundation did rec. a huge amount of materials with the recent move of the JLR HQ and necessary downsizing of their archives our collection has been growing for years. As far as the Churchill tools you may see an older list in PDF form at www,JCNA.com in the tool loan program. We also hold factory tools by Lucas, Bosch, Genrad, SPX, Zelenda, OTC, and others.

I think part of what you are asking about are tools for other British makes, THe short answer is yes we have a ton and are hoping to see leaders from the other makes offer to help identify and catalog them. As the tools came from old dealerships (and new) they were equipped with tools for MG, Triumph, AH, and such.

As an amusing point one of the most odd tools is a coil spring holder for a Stag. It looks like a device that may have been used in 50 shades of Grey, !!!

As far as how the tool loan works the rules and terms are posted in the tool loan section of the JCNA website cited above. The program has been in effect for more than 6 years and has been reported on each year at the JCNA AGM. Hope to see you.

Here are some of the tools in pic form.

Glenn you can see many of the Other makes tools on the Foundation's web site under a donation made by Chuck Hadley--who runs a well known E type body renovation shop!

Hmmmm, the maintenance schedule for my newtome `01 says nothing about adjusting the valves? Which means changing the spark plugs, which it does want at 100,000 miles, will be positively recreational. Whew. You guys scared me.

Who changes plugs on 100,000 mile schedule? Or does valves for that matter? Waayyy to many variables that determine when these need to be done to go by a mileage schedule. For instance, the stock breather system may very well hasten both due to the excessive carbon buildup it causes in the combustion chamber which both the plugs and valves are part of.
Poor ring seal will compound this. Ring seal, ironically, can be adversely affected by crankcase breathing by way of crankcase pressure. Things like visual inspection of plugs, compression/leakdown tests, etc. will tell you a lot more about the condition of your rings and valves than your odometer ever will. Especially at 100,000 miles.
I put this practice right up there with waiting for an idiot light to come on telling you to add oil or waiting 15,000 miles to change that oil because that's what the manufacturer says to do. A manufacturer that has absolutely no clue of your driving habits, mind you.

I pulled one plug just to see and it looked fine, nice and tan and dry. New iridium NGKs on the way from Amazon. If 100k is good enough for Jaguar, it's good enough for me. This one's got 103k miles on her and runs like new. Oil at 10k is also fine with me as that's what the book says. I did put in new transmission juice though. I drive this XJ8 like every $5k used car I've ever owned – hard and fast! They seem to like it that way.
