what type of tensioners do i have?

Default what type of tensioners do i have?

guys quick question...how can i find out generation my tensioners are on my jag? i was going through the posts and i read about the DIY jobs and became a bit paranoid haha its a 2001 Jaguar XJR ....also any place i can look to get my engine number? i have not yet searched for it yet...but at least ill know where to look for once i do search for it.

appreciate it gentlemen!

Based on your model year your engine was originally assembled with the second generation, spring assisted, tensioners.

Without knowledge and/or documentation of replacement a physical inspection and replacement are in order.

By far the easiest way to acquire you engine serial number is to ask for the build sheet at a Jaguar dealer. They can pull that using your VIN number.

I think they'll be the plastic-bodied ones that are known to fail.

See who else has thoughts.

Google and the Search button are your friends: search for engine number and you will find where it is located on the engine;

Your tensioners are second generation plastic aided by a spring UNLESS THEY HAVE BEEN CHANGED, which is Bob's point; YOU NEED TO PULL THE CAM COVERS AND CHECK, if they are not metal, replace them as soon as possible, they are probably the originals. {When I checked mine, they were plastic, one side had a 3/8inch tear, the other 5/8" -- changed them just in time)}.

yeah guys i ended up pulling the came covers for better sleep at night loll and this is what i found....

i also called a few jaguar dealerships and gave them my VIN number and only two out of about eight dealerships were able to tell me that i have metal ones....but i do not know how they got that information....either they knew from the engine build or the last owner had them changed from the dealer? but who knows i still wanted to confirm and that is what i saw on both sides now i can sleep safely at night!

i do appreciate all the helpful hints peoples!

Your '01 car came with plastic tensioners. Unless replaced under warranty the Jaguar corporate data base would not have a record of the work. Only the servicing dealer would have such a record and many have lost or archived records from many years ago.
