Hi, am I able to topp off transmission fluid thru radiator transmission line? I installed new radiator and lost proablpr close to a qt of fluid...thanks

 

You can use the cooler line, but the trick is to be able to get the fluid in that small dia. opening. Since you need to raise the car and remove the fill plug with the engine running to check the level, you may as well just replace the fluid there. You didn't include the transmission model in your post, so I'm assuming you have a 5HP24.

If the car has over 60K mi you should consider draining the trans. and replace the filter, then do another couple of drain/refill operation to renew the majority of the fluid. Installing the Transgo or ZF updated pressure control valve while the pan is off is also advised. Do a forum search for more information.

Not true any more. I believe the recommended change interval is 50K mi.

 

The ZF 5HP24 repair/rebuild manual states that the fluid should be renewed every 10 years.

 

I'm only quoting what I read in the manual.
THE TRANSMISSION, FINAL DRIVE UNIT AND SUPERCHARGER (Where fitted) ARE OIL FILLED-FOR-LIFE UNITS AND DO NOT REQUIRE CHECKING BY THE DRIVER. I can't see anything from the top of engine or underneath that resembles a dipstick, or anywhere to put any kind of fluid. My XJ8 has done 105,000 miles to date.

What is a LIFETIME????
1. JAGUAR Tranny repair manuals ALSO state, "Tranny fluid "lifetime" is limited to either 50k-100k miles ... and/or ... no longer than 10 years of use." So if your jag has only 20k miles on it [for example], but used for a period of 10 years, the fluid needs to be changed ... its lifetime is past. So the jaguar concept of what lifetime is different from a human's concept of a lifetime.
2. If we buy a used jag and the repair records do not ensure a tranny fluid change after 10 years of use, then the new owner should understand this concept of jaguar's Lifetime definition. Of course, there are 25 years old jag tyrannys still running. Jag trannys are suggested to last up to 150K with proper attention to maintenance.
3. Consider replacing the tranny Pressure relief valve in years 1999 plus in the ZF5 speed.
4. This may be hard to accept due to[some of the] jag literature is misleading and some of us may not plan for more maintenance costs.

 

There are NO lifetime fluids!
This is just marketing and the goal is for you to get rid of your car BEFORE it needs anything! Next you purchase a NEW car.
No car manufacturer is interested in making their old models last.

So it depends on what you are going to do? If buying new and flipping it over every couple of years then yes the fluids will be lifetime for YOU. If you buy used like I do then the first thing I do on any car is change all the fluids I can. Rear diff, transmission, brake fluid, coolant, SC oil. Most people do change oil but all those other fluids are ignored.
