Default Wow! Partial list/cost of repairs on Jan I just acquired

Hello all.

As mentioned in the new guy forum, I just purchased my mother-in-law's 2000 XJ8 for my daugther's first ride.

For the price, it seemed like a good idea at the time, now, only time will tell.
Had my first engine codes today which look pretty common, 307- cyl 7 misfiring, 1316- misfire rate exceeded and then the odd one, 1111-system pass. How it passes with those two codes, I dunno.

So, my m-in-law kept all receipts of repairs and maintenance. I went through and picked out the biggies, or ones that seemed significant and created the below list. All total, about $20k. This is NOT comprehensive, there are probably another $10k in expenses and maintenance, maybe more.

Damn, this thing was (is?) a money pit. Sure is purty though.

Other than Coil 7 being replaced 3 times, see any other red flags?

Again, this is just partial. She paid about $41k for this in 2002.
Sure hope this doesn't continue. If it does, we'll probably drive it till it dies and then donate it for taxes.

I'll post some pics shortly, it's a lovely car inside and out.

I would say congrats! Big issues already addressed, and you got nicest mother-in-law. ( Mine would probably make the repairmen eat the coil #7 :-) )

Default Hope so.

Thanks NJ, that's kind of what I'm hoping.
Although, seeing the 307 code again isn't inspiring.

Taking it in to a local shop tomorrow for further diagnosis.

I've replaced different ignition coils 3-4x on my 2000 XJ8, easy DIY repair. The codes I typically get when one is bad:

Generic:

P0354 Ignition Coil D, primary/secondary circuit
P0304 cylinder #4 misfire

Jaguar manufacturer specific codes:

P1313 Misfire rate catalyst damage fault - bank 1
P1316 Misfire rate exceeds emissions

Did the former mechanic use genuine Jaguar replacement coils? Or maybe replaced with a used one to save the shop money? Maybe some experts can weigh in on what other issue may cause repeated failure of a perfectly good coil.

I buy mine @ Gaudin Jaguar online. earlier this year one cost me $101.15 + S&H.

Search this forum for easy instructions to replace coils.

(I have a 4 PIN LNE1510AB)

Mine came with similar amounts of money spent XJ8dad.

Not wishing to stick a pin in your balloon but time proved that most was pure fiction and the amounts were actually exorbitant labour charges and ridiculous prices paid for parts (ie $100 per spark plug) plus fitting.

The recently replaced tensioners on mine from previous owner are booked in to be replaced, along with chains and guides.

I too thought everything that needed doing was done..but I do have an impressive pile of receipts. I hope your collection was better spent than mine.

The very best of luck with the few issues you have and I hope the money pit has been filled in by your mother in law.

I have bought 6 new Jaguars over the past 30 years and numerous used ones and my total maintenance costs are not even close to that.

Other then my current old 02 -- I have put over 100k on all of them. I did replace one AC compressor -- and a I think one coil on one of my 6 cyl's . Some sensors .. a few other odd hoses.

As Iconoclast alluded to, if coil #7 is bad you should get 0357 code.
Since you don't mention this I presume the code isn't there so the problem is not the coil itself ....?
Easy way to tell is swap the coil over with #8 say and see for any change in the codes.
Maybe plug or injector...?

I have a 2002 xj8 which started running rough, I replaced the plugs, cleaned the mas air flow sensor and replaced the vacuum line going to the brake booster. After driving a few miles the restricted performance light comes on and the car starts running rough. I disconnected each coil 1 at a time and noticed a difference in idle so I guessing the coils are ok. Some of the codes that are showing are PO171, PO301,PO304,P0300,P1313. Any info would be greatly appreciated. Thanks

To the OP : there are some very poor quality coils about. My colleague replaced all 6 on his XJ6, and they all failed within a couple of years. If the cylinder 7 was replaced with a cheap one, and then keeps getting replaced with more cheap ones, that would do the trick.

I calculate your mother's expenditure at about 55 cents per mile, for depreciation and maintenance. Add in gas, it comes to about 75 cents per mile. This is presumably with all work done at a shop. A new Camry, according to Consumer reports, is 55 cents per mile.

I'm not sure how much you were expecting a car like the XJ8 to cost, but it sounds reasonable to me.

My Jag has never seen the inside of a shop. Neither did my previous Jag. I've replaced one coil on my current Jag, that I've had about five years, and one knock sensor. I did the secondary chain tensioners and the aluminum thermo housing as PM shortly after I got it. Of course I have done the brakes, oil changes, tranny fluid change and had the tires replaced. I guess if you do take it in to a dealer or a shop you will get shaken down pretty good.
