Is the lcd display replaceable or do I need to find an XJR instrument panel and swap them out? I'm guessing the odometer info is stored in the cluster somewhere, probably inconveniently located too?
My display works, but its slowly dying, I suspect some of the LCD has ruptured in some manner as its slowly been expanding its unusable pixels from the upper left toward the lower left. Starting to miss some characters now, so might as well put this on the list.
The mileage will follow the INSTPK.
The supercharged INSTPK is different from the NA.
2000MY to 2003MY XJR INSTPKs will plug&play.(1998/99 are AJ26 and have different connectors)
I’m familiar with the delaminating odometer and that it can be hard to read. I did end up replacing the bulb with a bright white led. I figure it’s so much easier than trying to fix the darn thing.
I was able to perform some surgery on mine a while ago when this happened. Remove all the parts from the panel (front cover plastics, remove PCB by unclipping all the ribbon connectors) so you're only left with the gauges panel with backing and motors/needles (no need to disassemble further). I used a butter knife to carefully separate the adhesive vinyl enough around the LCD such that I could pull it out, and slide in a good LCD from a donor car. Dabbed a tiny bit of superglue around the edges to help the adhesive vinyl stick to the new LCD and prevent peeling/curling. Mileage followed the PCB, not the LCD, so everything stayed good.
This technique could be used somewhat easier if you get a donor gauge cluster that's identical, you can just swap your PCB over rather than performing surgery. My donor was from an XJ8 so it wouldn't be a direct swap...
Couple years later that one started to do the same thing, started to get discoloration/creep around the edges of the LCD. Guess the "tint" glass starts to separate from the LCD glass and let air/contaminants seep in around the edges. When I pulled the original out of my cluster, the "tint" glass and LCD glass came apart in my hand.
Re inside views - I don't have much photos of this, found one on my computer though of the PCB off an AJ26 cluster, this shows the side facing the driver, with bulbs etc:
Note the red ribbon connector at the bottom center, which would go to the display LCD module.
