Default 1992 jaguar xj6 xj40 a good year?

Anyone have any experience with this? I have a 1990 which has been lots of problems and am wanting to use as a parts car for a 1992 I'm thinking of picking up. Should I get an 1993 or 1994 instead? I just hate that those all have square headlights. I like the quads and this 1992 is a base model with the quads. I kind of like the more old school interior of the pre 1993 models. And the steering wheel on the later ones are absolutely hideous.

93/4 don't have the cursed attack seatbelts, but 94 doesn't have a glove box- air bag instead. I don't think 92 had tilt wheel.....mine has been reliable as it has not stranded me yet, but the 94 has.... it really depends how well it's been maintained. And worst First World Problem -- no cup holders in 92, later had armrest mounted ones that are too small to use. Gah!

Yeah I don't like those seatbelts. The 88s don't have them but they're are reputably more unreliable

Lots of parts from your 1990 will be compatible with all of the later XJ40s, but off the top of my head the '93-'94 cars would not be able to use the front seats, alternator and probably several other components, and a lot of the electrical connectors are different. A '92 should be mostly compatible with the '90. The steering wheels in the '93-'94 contain a mechanical airbag, so that's why the center is so bulbous. I retrofitted quad headlamps on our '93, so you could use the headlamps, frames and trim panels to retrofit a '93-'94.

If the '92 is available at a good price, it's hard to go wrong unless the car has been neglected or has any significant rust.

The good thing about the 1992 was that the climate control did not have the CONSTANTLY FAULTY/LEAKING evaporator like the 1993/94.
The bad thing that was that although the A/C was COLD, it used R12.

Other than the attack belts, mine was a very reliable car. (I kinda miss it)

I'll second what Don said. One of the drawbacks of the 93-94 cars is there are a lot of 93-94 parts only and if I recall correctly there were only 10,000 94s made so for me they dont show up in the yards that often.

I like the big headlights myself (I think Im an odd one here).

I ended up getting a 1991 Vanden Plas. Shame the later vanden plas aren't as different. Mine has a solid wood steering wheel and leather different panels
