Default Planning my attack

Hi guys!

Background...Cat blew head gasket. Heard from my buddy that directed me to this car that previous owner really overheated the thing. So I bought a low mileage motor. Pulled the old one over the weekend.

I probably am over thinking this, but how do you install this engine? I would like to install the trans and engine as unit. My concerns are that this thing with the trans has to weigh well over 1/2 a ton, and the angle with the trans would have to be crazy. That angle scares me with out be good solid points to hold the thing. I pulled the old one by welding a chain link to the head bolts. I don't want to do that to the new one, and I removed the trans separate. Do I remove the sub frame and put it in from the bottom? If the engine is from the top how do I tie it up?

Any advice is really appreciated.

When I worked at Jaguar we had special tools that bolted to the intake manifold studs to lift the engine.
I would remove the gearbox first and then the engine unless you have a car lift.
You can remove the engine/trans from the car complete with the front subframe and set the units together on some steel tables and lift the body free.

Removal of the engine and gearbox as a unit will require removal of the bonnet and likely the radiator and other parts from the front of the engine compartment.

Some steel plate with a few holes drilled can be bolted to the intake studs under the fastener nuts. A bolt hole and chain can be fitted to the steel plates and the engine will hang.

Thanks for the advice, Bob. Exactly what I was looking for. Waiting for some parts before she goes back together, but I'll let you know how it goes.

Still waiting for rear seal, but made the brackets out of 1/4” weld flat. The bolts I am using on the exhaust-side bracket are longer than the ones in the picture. Feeling much more confident about this. Thanks motorcarman!

So far have installed front main seal, motor mounts, valve gasket, hose-o-rings lots of cleaning and painted a few things.

Just as a side note. I really appreciate you guys.

So I got the engine in... I wouldn't suggest doing it this way. Took a jack on the tranny, loosening the rack and a long 2x4 on the front of the engine to get it in position. My engine lifts, arm wasn’t long enough, but close enough to try to get it in anyway.

I’m sure if I had an A frame or a way to do this from the ceiling it would be more doable. Next time I’d do engine first and then trans. It really would have been easier.




Angle gets pretty crazy going in. Didn’t like all the weight on the chain that came with the leveler. Borrowed a beefier one to put it in

Had to use a jack on the tranny.

Got it in and mostly hooked up. Few more hours more to go.

Seeing the engine and trans out makes me think what a monster. Thanks for the pictorial documentation.

I'm pretty sure that Haynes service book was the secret to you success. It's so comprehensive. I hope the rest of the install goes smoothly and the engine purrs when you fire it up.
